$100K worth of cocaine found off Port Canaveral

Authorities searched the north Brevard County coastline from the air a day after a kilo of cocaine was found bobbing in the waters along Port Canaveral.

The find – with a street value that could hit $100,000 - was made early Wednesday by members of Keep Brevard Beautiful, a group dedicated to clearing the county’s beaches of trash, officials said.

Members were in a boat when the package was spotted in the water, officials with the group say.

“They called from the boat and were met at the dock by police,” said Linda Nichols of Keep Brevard Beautiful.

Nichols said the drug discovery was a first for the group.

Investigators say packaged drugs, likely tossed overboard by smugglers, occasionally are spotted along Florida’s coast. It was also the second time in less than a month that a cache of illegal drugs – called “square groupers,” because of their packaged, square shape - turned up along the county’s shoreline.

In early September, a brick of marijuana was discovered near Hightower Beach Park and turned over to Satellite Beach Police.

The Brevard County helicopter swept over the area today in a bid to locate any more drugs before they washed ashore.

    Cocaine found floating near Port
Cleanup group Keep Brevard Beautiful discovers kilo off Port Canaveral

Authorities searched the north Brevard County coastline from the air Thursday, a day after a kilo of cocaine was found bobbing in the waters along Port Canaveral.

The cocaine had an estimated value of more than $25,000 and, depending on purity and distribution, could bring as much as $100,000 on the street, investigators said. The discovery was made early Wednesday by members of Keep Brevard Beautiful, a group dedicated to clearing the county's beaches of trash, officials said.

"They were doing their routine clean up of the basin near Freddie Patrick Park when they found it," said Rosalyn Harvey, spokeswoman for the Canaveral Port Authority.

Members of the group, who are contracted by the port to clean the waters, were in a pontoon boat when the package was spotted.

"They called from the boat and were met at the dock by police," said Linda Nichols of Keep Brevard Beautiful.

Nichols said the drug discovery was a first for the group, which deals with finds more along the lines of discarded bottles, plastic bags and other trash.

Investigators say carefully packaged drugs, likely tossed overboard by smugglers anywhere from the Caribbean to the Atlantic Ocean, occasionally are spotted coursing the currents that hug Florida's coastal shelf.

It was also the second time in less than a month that a cache of illegal drugs -- typically called "square groupers" because of their packaged shape -- have turned up along the Space Coast.

In early September, a brick of marijuana was discovered near Hightower Beach Park and turned over to Satellite Beach police.

"We don't get that too much here in Brevard County," said Bruce Barnett, spokesman for the Brevard County Sheriff's Office.

Thursday, the Brevard County sheriff's helicopter was used to search the waters in case more packages of the illegal drug turned up. Law enforcement officials also ask residents not to handle any suspicious packages that wash ashore.

"Just call law enforcement," Barnett said. "Let us deal with it,"

This could explain cases of shark attacks. A shark eating a package of coke might live long enough to become very fast and deadly.

Could be a movie there, Jaws on Coke.

And the cannabis might account for the beached whales.
