$100K worth of cocaine found off Port Canaveral
Authorities searched the north Brevard County coastline from the air a day after a kilo of cocaine was found bobbing in the waters along Port Canaveral.
The find – with a street value that could hit $100,000 - was made early Wednesday by members of Keep Brevard Beautiful, a group dedicated to clearing the county’s beaches of trash, officials said.
Members were in a boat when the package was spotted in the water, officials with the group say.
“They called from the boat and were met at the dock by police,” said Linda Nichols of Keep Brevard Beautiful.
Nichols said the drug discovery was a first for the group.
Investigators say packaged drugs, likely tossed overboard by smugglers, occasionally are spotted along Florida’s coast. It was also the second time in less than a month that a cache of illegal drugs – called “square groupers,” because of their packaged, square shape - turned up along the county’s shoreline.
In early September, a brick of marijuana was discovered near Hightower Beach Park and turned over to Satellite Beach Police.
The Brevard County helicopter swept over the area today in a bid to locate any more drugs before they washed ashore.
