Mumbai, Nov 17 (IANS) A huge amount of ephedrine, a controlled drug, concealed in a sofa has been seized from a container bound for the southeast Asian nation of Laos, an official said Thursday.
'Acting on a tip off, we searched outward-bound containers at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) and found 125 kg of Ephedrine hidden in the cavities of a wooden sofa,' a Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) official told IANS.
'We have seized the drug and are investigating details of the exporter who had loaded the sofa in a ship bound to Laos,' he added.
Ephedrine is commonly used as a stimulant, appetite suppressant, an aid to concentration, decongestant and to treat hypotension associated with anaesthesia.
