A 13-year-old Victoria-area girl has died in Victoria General Hospital after a severe adverse reaction to a street drug.

The girl and two friends bought and consumed what they believed was ecstasy,Victoria Police Insp. Clark Russell said Tuesday. Her two friends were not harmed.

He said the youths bought the pills "purported to be ecstasy" late Saturday afternoon in downtown Victoria.

"Within the hour she started feeling unwell and violently sick and ended up in hospital Saturday night."

Vancouver Island Health Authority spokeswoman Karin Heimlich said Tuesday night that the girl died "as a direct result of taking an amphetamine."

She said the girl's family was grateful to staff members in the pediatric intensive-care unit at VGH for their efforts in trying to save their daughter.

It is not clear if the drug involved was ecstasy or another substance, and toxicology reports will not be completed for a couple of weeks.

"The family wanted people to know just how easily this can happen," Heimlich said.

She said they wanted to emphasize the danger of street drugs, to keep such a tragedy from happening to others.

Russell also stressed the perils of using illegal drugs.

"It's important for the public to be aware that when you go out to purchase street drugs you have to recognize that you're running a risk, in terms that you take the person's word that it is what they say it is."

Russell said anyone who is intent on using illegal drugs should use the buddy system, although that didn't work in this case.

"Don't take them alone, and if you start to feel unwell, then seek medical attention sooner rather than later."

The girl was not a resident of the city of Victoria, was not known to police and lived at home with her parents, he said. Her name is not being released and the municipality where she lived is not being named.

The investigation is continuing. "One of our focuses is to track down the person who sold [the pills] to her," Russell said.

How the fu*k does this have anything to do with the story. Sometimes the media just pisses me right off with their bullshit. Does the death get justifiedif the girl was known to the police and lived on the streets. Does that make everyone reading the story go,"Uh Huh, it was bound to happen any way."

    Give me a fu*kin break.

Sorry just go a little agrovated from that.

ya this right here pisses me off... Such stupid ignorance... come on!
they want people to know how easy it is... what the fuck i say! what
the fuck!!! explanation: lets look at this in statistics first... we
have here just in the usa hundreds of millions of people and hundreds
of millions of children... and this one random girl randomly gets the
wrong drugs on a random day... and this is suppose to mean that this
could easily happen anytime to anyone? what the fuck i say again... so
i should be scared as hell to take a risk in life cause i could be on
of the hundreds of millions and be that random person that dies? that
should scare me away? noooo that doesnt make a lick of sense... fucking
    ignorant people...

sad story... but lets stop acting like 1000s or millions or anything
are dieing everyday or something from this... not even 100s are dieing
from drugs... dont quote me on those numbers please... but seriously
    this is ridiculous...

one girl one random day... one random lie... doesnt happen everytime all the time.. so please stop acting like it does....

also compare this to how many times people have tripped lived and liked
it... compare the numbers and lets see the risk actually involved!

also if we spent less time banning and actually telling safer and more
efficient ways to use drugs we would even more so lessen the risk...

the war on drugs is a never ending war... when u cant beat an "enemy" u join them...

besides why are drugs bad but bungie jumping and sky diving or driving
or surfing or anything else fun and risky is good? they both have the
same or near same amount of risk.. and all of the above is by choice
and with control doesnt effect anyone but the user...

    Ignorance pisses me off!

this is smart words... either he is actually just a smart open minded
non ignorant guy... or he has or does drugs... this is the better way
to think... cause the war on drugs is never ending.. so make the
situation better and less dangerous... smart guy!

I would like to know exactly what the drug was. It says 'an amphetamine.' Which one? PMA?

Of course, were these drugs legal, much of the danger would be absent.
Also, many people die from legal drugs, such as aspirin and
paracetamol, but no one gets arrested for that.

A 13 year-old girl can just as easily die from a punch in the stomach as she can off an XTC pill.

Moral: DDDC Don't do drugs children (until you're old enough)

    Sad story all the same.
