Montreal police say they have arrested 17 people in connection with a series of raids targeting a drug ring on Tuesday.
Though the ring was operating primarily in Montreal's South-West borough, investigators raided 18 homes and 14 cars on the island of Montreal and its north and south shores.
A search warrant was also executed as far away as Moffet, in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region.
The suspects were selling cocaine and marijuana, said Montreal police Const. Yannick Ouimet.
We are talking about a link to the Hells Angels here, said Ouimet. This network was pretty much working all across the province.
During the operation police seized:
Roughly 45 kilograms of marijuana.
285 grams of cocaine.
Between 400 and 500 mature marijuana plants.
3 long-range weapons.
1 submachine gun.
$160 835 in cash.
The investigation, known as Operation AGRÉÉ, was launched last fall and stemmed from another investigation known as Operation Axe.
Operation Axe, in February 2009, resulted in the arrest of 47 people who were allegedly part of a network of groups working together to traffic drugs in the Montreal and Ottawa areas.
Police said it was the largest police operation in Montreal history.
