20 charged with running large marijuana operation
An indictment unsealed in federal court in Kansas today charged 20 people with doing more than $22 million in business distributing marijuana.
The Jamaican trafficking group made the money from 2000 to 2009, authorities said, transporting about 2,000 pounds of marijuana each month from Phoenix to Kansas City and other locations.
The Drug Enforcement Administration worked with the Internal Revenue Service, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and Kansas City police in an 18-month investigation that is still ongoing, they said.
The indictment also asks for a $22 million money judgment against the defendants and forfeiture of seven properties in Kansas City.
The leaders of the conspiracy were Gladstone McDowell, 50, and Michael Francois, 39, both of Kansas City, according to the indictment.
Seven other defendants are listed from Kansas City and two from Shawnee. Other defendants are in custody elsewhere or are listed as being from other cities.
