Biggest ever haul: Heroin worth Rs 48 cr seized

JAIPUR/JAISALMER: In the biggest ever drug haul in Rajasthan, the special operations group (SOG) and the local police seized 48 kg of heroin,

worth Rs 48 crore, from Mohangarh village in Jaisalmer district on Thursday. The contraband was to be delivered to some Delhi-based drug smugglers.

Police arrested a smuggler, identified as Yar alias Yar Mohammad, a resident of Bhanu Ka Ganv, who had allegedly taken the heroin from Pakistani smugglers near international border in Barmer three months ago. Yar Mohammad has confessed to be working for Dadia, a Pak-based smuggler, said police. According to sources, he had altogether smuggled in 58 kg of heroin. A frantic search has been launched for the remaining consignment. All the seized 48 packets have Made in Pakistan' and Made in Afghanistan' labels on them.

The seizure came close on the heels of the arrest of Sodha Khan alias Lunia, who was involved in the smuggling of RDX and other explosives. According to the police, it was Sodha Khan who spilled the beans on Yar Mohammad during interrogation.

According to ADG (SOG) Kapil Garg, Sodha Khan told them that Yar Mohammad had been smuggling heroin from Pakistan and delivering it to some Delhi-based smugglers for a long time. "On this, we launched a search for Mohammad and rounded him up on Wednesday. Initially he said he used to smuggle silver for Dadia, a resident of Sam area in Jaisalmer but currently living in Pakistan. Later he confessed to having smuggled 58 kg of heroin through international border in Barmer three months back," said Garg.

Yar Mohammad also tried to confuse the police by claiming that the consignment had already been delivered to some members of the Dadia gang who in turn handed it over to smugglers in Delhi. After constant grilling, he said that he was to deliver the consignment to Delhi-based smugglers, but could not do so because of the death of his mother. Sources said that some smugglers from Pakistan handed over the consignment to him after sneaking into Barmer.

He brought the consignment consisting of 58 packets in a Scorpio. The packets, each containing one kg, was buried in the backyard of his house in Bhanu Ka Ganv. But after the seizure of RDX, he got scared and shifted the consignment to the house of his brother-in-law Deete Khan in Chak No 2 BLM Sarhad Sadrau in Jaisalmer and his own farm there," said Garg. Yar Mohammad's brother Shah Mohammad and Dante Khan also helped him shift the consignment, for whom a seach is on.

Yaru smuggled in 145 kg heroin from Pak, finds probe

JAIPUR: A day after Rajasthan Police seized 48 kg of heroin near Mohangarh area in Jaisalmer district, investigations have revealed that Yaru alias Yar Mohammad had allegedly smuggled over 145 kg of heroin via international border in Barmer in last six months.

Police suspect that Yaru had visited Delhi 5-6 times recently. While they are frantically trying to verify the inputs they are receiving, interrogation of eight persons, who have been rounded up after Yaru's arrest on Wednesday, is going on.

Meanwhile, Yaru was produced in a local court in Jaisalmer on Friday and sent to seven-day police remand for further interrogation.

The police, who are aware of the modus operandi of the 3-4 gangs involved in drug-smuggling in Jaisalmer, said that Yar Mohammad and other detained persons are changing their statement frequently in bid to confuse the police.

It has also been established by the investigators that the heroin was smuggled from Pakistan and smugglers used international border in Barmer to smuggle in the consignment.

"It has come up during investigation that Yar Mohammad had smuggled at least 145 kg of heroin in the past few months and was working as a carrier for Dadia, a Pakistan-based smuggler. Besides, he had already visited Delhi 4-5 times and delivered some consignments to smugglers there," said a police officer.

The police are trying to unearth the remaining consignment of 10 kg heroin which Yar Mohammad could not deliver to the Delhi-based smugglers due to the death of her mother three months back.

When asked about the reports of other smuggled consignments, Special Operations Group (SOG) ADG Kapil Garg told TOI that there is a possibility of much more heroin packets having been smuggled into Barmer and then delivered to the Delhi-based smugglers, but anything concrete could be said only after verifying all the available facts.

"When interrogation with Yar Mohammad began after his arrest, he kept insisting that he had already delivered the consignment to smugglers of Delhi, but later succumbed to the pressure and revealed the whereabouts of the heroin packets. It's quite normal among drug-smugglers to confuse the police by providing false leads," said a police officer in Jaisalmer.

Mobile phones of Yar Mohammad and other suspects have been seized by the investigators and call details are being studied to know the network of the smugglers, including those of Delhi and Pakistan.

The Delhi Police and other agencies, including revenue intelligence and anti-narcotics department, are also in touch with the local police following the reports of heroin being smuggled to Delhi from border areas of Rajasthan.
