SAN DIEGO - Customs and Border Protection officers found 46 pounds of liquid methamphetamine in a vehicle's fuel tank at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry this week, the federal agency announced Thursday.
The discovery was made around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday when a 38-year-old driving a 2000 BMW with California license plates tried to cross into the United States, according to CBP.
He claimed to be a U.S. citizen but was unable to satisfy agents, who searched the vehicle with a scent dog who alerted on the stash secreted in a fuel tank, according to CBP.
The tank was divided into two compartments, one of which held gasoline. The other side had 46 pounds of liquid meth. Water weighs 8.3 pounds per gallon.
The driver, whose name was withheld, was booked into a federal detention center downtown. The U.S. Attorney's Office in San Diego will decide what to do charge him with.
