Alleged Colombian drug cartel leader faces trafficking charges in N.J.
NEWARK — Authorities said a reputed Colombian drug cartel leader is scheduled to have an initial appearance in a New Jersey courtroom today.
Salomon Camacho Mora was brought from Venezuela to face federal conspiracy, drug trafficking and money laundering charges in Newark.
Venezuelan authorities arrested the 65-year-old on Jan. 13. U.S. authorities had offered a reward of up to $5 million for information leading to his arrest.
The U.S. State Department said on its Web site that Camacho began trafficking cocaine in the 1980s. U.S. authorities said that since 1998 he had worked with Hermagoras Polanco. Officials claim the men were responsible for sending as much as 10 tons of cocaine to the U.S. between 1999 and 2000 alone.
