MOORHEAD – Moorhead police executed a search warrant at a Moorhead business Wednesday night and seized about 2,000 bags of synthetic marijuana, a product recently banned by state lawmakers.
Reports will be forwarded to the Clay County Attorney's Office for consideration of charges, police said.
In addition to the banned substance, officers confiscated financial records and cash from the Pyromaniacs Smoke Shop, Lt. Brad Penas said in a news release.
Police plan to ask the Clay County Attorney’s Office to charge the store's owner, Yassin Wazwaz, with the sale of synthetic marijuana.
During the 2011 Minnesota Legislative session, lawmakers passed a bill banning possession and sale of synthetic marijuana effective July 1.
Penas said police visited five Moorhead businesses July 1 to talk about the new law and give them a letter outlining it. Each of the businesses was in compliance at the time, and none were displaying synthetic marijuana for sale to customers.
However, the following week, police determined Pyromaniacs Smoke Shop was selling a banned substance, Penas said.
A sample was purchased and sent to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension lab for analysis. On Wednesday, Moorhead police received the lab results, which showed the purchased item positive for a banned substance.
Police then searched the shop, prompting officers to seize the product, business records and cash.
