Banten Customs sees more drug arrests at airport this year
The number foreign drug smuggling attempts foiled at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport has drastically increased this year compared to last year, customs officials report.
"This has been a successful year for Banten Customs and Excise Office in terms of intercepting drugs from overseas," Banten Customs and Excise Office chief Bachtiar told The Jakarta Post on Friday.
The office had foiled 28 such cases between January and October this year.
As of Friday, the office had seized a total of 49.3 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine (known locally as shabu-shabu, 22.8 liters of liquid meth, 11.3 kilograms of ketamine, 100,225 ecstasy pills and 55 grams of cocaine, he said.
It had also arrested 33 suspects allegedly involved in smuggling. These suspects were of various origins, including Iran (12), Indonesia (11), Malaysia (5) China (2) Singapore (1), The Netherlands (1), India (1) and the United States (1).
Last year, customs officers foiled a total of 18 drug smuggling attempts and confiscated 40.2 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine, 14.2 kilograms ketamine, 29,637 ectasy pills and 630 grams cocaine at the airport, arresting 24 suspects in connection with the busts.
