Bid to smuggle 2,500 kilograms of hashish foiled
Rawalpindi: The Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF), Rawalpindi, foiling an attempt of smuggling a huge quantity of narcotics from Peshawar to Lahore, has recovered 2,500 kilograms of hashish from a mini-truck during a raid at GT Road near Sangjani Toll Plaza here on Tuesday, the ANF spokesman said.

The raid was conducted on information from intelligence that the drug mafia would try to smuggle a huge quantity of drugs to central Punjab, which would later be shifted to other provinces, he said. He said that the ANF authorities constituted teams to monitor suspicious vehicles.

A team was deployed at GT Road near Sangjani Toll Plaza, which intercepted a mini-truck bearing registration number LES-8846, loaded with cellulose, the spokesman said. He added that apparently it was a mini-truck for local transportation of roughage to deceive the ANF, but the team recovered 2,500 kilograms of hashish packed in cartons. The team also arrested driver Zahid Mehmood, son of Jalal Din, a resident of Lahore.

During preliminary questioning, the arrested man told investigation officers that he was attached with a Lahore-based drug mafia as a carrier, adding that he was taking hashish to Lahore.

The ANF officials engaged with the investigation of the case didn’t rule out the possibility of smuggling of narcotics across the border.

Meanwhile, ANF teams have been sent to Lahore, Peshawar and other cities of the Punjab to arrest mafia members involved in drug smuggling.
