MODESTO, Calif. (AP) — Police say a man tried to cut off his own arm at a restaurant in Modesto, Calif., because he thought he had injected air into a vein while shooting cocaine and feared he would die unless he took drastic action.

Authorities say 33-year-old Michael Lasiter rushed into the Denny's restaurant late Friday and started stabbing himself in one arm with a butter knife he grabbed from a table.

They say that when that knife didn't work Lasiter took a butcher knife from the kitchen and dug it into his arm.

Police Sgt. Brian Findlen says Lasiter told officers he thought he needed to amputate his arm to keep himself from dying from the cocaine injection.
Lasiter was taken to a hospital for treatment of severe cuts.

Fucking beutifull! Imagine the thoughts swirling around the minds of the kitchen staff?

You can blame this one on lack of harm reduction being tough in public, get on the phone with your local needle exchange and get ask them to start offering harm reduction classes. Some well funded ones could even lure users in with free pizza or some other such bribe. My local exchange offers 20$ gift cards to anyone who fills out a survey and gets a STD test.

the time it took to realise the butter knife wasnt doing the trick and went to search for a butcher knife he would have been dead already if he shot a big enough air bubble that could have killed him, fuck he would have been dead already before he got to the butter knife presuming he didnt shoot up cocaine right at his booth at dennys. he just shot to much coke and freaked.
    fucking funny story

It takes a lot of air to stop a heart. At least 15 or more mls which is far more than the average insulin syringe holds....
Then again, shooting coke makes people psycho..

The last time I tried, 5 ml did not work (obviously).
Any yes it's "me" not "SWIM", cause as far as I know they have not made air a controlled substance (yet).

But seriously, are there not two different mechanisms? One being small air bubbles causing embolisms in the lungs, which while possible, is not very likely with say 1-2ml. The other mechanism being a big volume (15...30+ ml) *injected fast into a major vein* will stop the heart, kind of short-circuiting one chamber/valve?

Large embolisms fill the heart with so much air that blood can no longer be pumped, sending the heart muscle into fibrillation and stopping it (about 300mls). Small air emboli (fraction of a ml) are usually not a problem if they are venous -they get broken up into tiny bubbles by the pulmonary vasculature, disperse and get resorbed. Dangerous air emboli are usually caused by jugular catheters being left open and a large amount of air being introduced. This volume if very large can stop the heart as indicated above, but if not big enough to do that, it can plug up the pulmonary arteries causing problems absorbing oxygen. The average amount of air introduced in an IV injection is negligible and usually at least 50 ml is needed to really cause harm, though bad luck (ie-5 mm bubble landing in a coronary artery) could allow for a smaller volume. Some people have an open channel between chambers called the foramen ovale, which should close at birth. If it is open, big bubbles can get through to the arterial side and block bloodflow to organs, the brain, etc. Sometimes enough gas can move across directly to the pulmonary veins and also occlude blood supply to important things.

Swim is wondering if maybe she misunderstands, but still feels the need to ask...

Why would swiy want to inject air? Was the a suicide attempt gone wrong?
swim doesnt understand why anyone would want to inject themselves with air unless it was because they knew it might be fatal.....

maybe if not a suicide attempt but just had a hard time finding a vein and let alot of air into the rig without letting it out before injection?

swim is very curious right now...

^Air has never been a drug, has it? It's very addictive, however!

The man in California should have been given a chain saw.

Too bad he hadn't shot up his coke in his dick. Many people have.

Actually many many years ago there was a physician that stood up in front of his colleges and in a quite arrogant manner began to inject air into his veins. Syringe after syringe I remember. And everyone was sure he would die but did not. But I am unable to recall when or where this happened. I will look for more information. And I do not know how much was actually injected. But I believe that in medicine it was thought in the old days that any air would kill and the physician was graphically disabusing that belief. But still don't go injecting yourself with air.

Lobsang added 4 Minutes and 51 Seconds later...

Did not the transexual SWIMMER in the high heels and lipstick rectally probing himself for hours in front of a mirror on cocaine say the exact same thing??

Yup - direct quote. That was a hell of a disturbing thread.

    A hell of a drug!

jees that is rough, 'shame.' this all goes to show how uneducated people can cause harm on themselves from lack of research & knowledge...

interesting that this guy from the first post would of gone to these extreme measures for a bit of air in his system. suppose he was worried about dying & not being able to shoot coke any more... who knows shooting crack can cause very irrational behaviour & the people are usually very...... well excessive.

    I wouldn't doubt it..

"...a hard time finding a vein and let alot of air into the rig without letting it out before injection?"

Hard to do, who uses a 10cc syringe at all, and then manages to get it half full of air on accident?
It was actually completely full, but after 5cc the needle slipped out of the vein, creating bubbles under the skin. Made a funny sound.

And yeah it was a "fuck you world" attempt. Best part is my fucking ex girlfriend watched and when nothing happened told me it would take an hour to kill. Worst part is I said "OK", went to bed and actually fell asleep within minutes. But then again, in a way I wanted to sleep. Just never wake up.
