Council officials in Newport are trying to discover who planted cannabis in flower pots put out to brighten up the city.

More than 20 of the illegal plants were discovered nestling amongst begonias and petunias in the street flower displays. But by the time police were told and went to examine the specimens they had already been harvested.

The council said it was checking CCTV footage to find the culprits.

"I had never seen cannabis growing in the wild before so it was crazy to see it," said local businessman Dean Beddis, who made the discovery.

"It's actually rather a beautiful plant and stood out wonderfully. But they have gone now. I don't know who took them."

The leafy pot plants were growing in open view of passers-by on some of the city's busiest streets.

Newport councillor Rhys Hutchings, also a member of the band Goldie Lookin Chain, said he thought local teenagers were to blame.

"It's either kids or the Newport underworld community - I'm pretty sure it's not Alan Titchmarsh," he joked.

But city council officials have taken a dim view of the green-fingered criminals.

"It's a serious issue and we will be informing the police and checking our CCTV cameras," said a spokesperson.

Gwent Police said the fact that the plants had now gone was problematic.

"Now that the plants have apparently disappeared it's difficult to determine whether they were in fact illegal cannabis plants or not and, if so, whether they had been deliberately planted for cultivation," said a spokesperson.

Yes, i bet whomever threw those seeds there did it with the intent of cultivating weed for them to harvest come autumn. You can see those criminals are growing ever bolder, unleashing such dangerous plants upon the public. But who could have taken them? Perhaps a fearless vigilante unafraid of the devilweed's insanity-inducing touch?

That's what this spokesperson probably thinks.

They suspect it was grown for cultivation? Like he couldn't find a better, more discrete fucking place? Does it not even occur to the author of this article, or the police, that this was a demonstration for the legalization of Cannabis? It's happening all over the world right now, everyday I see another article about dozens or hundreds of plants found growing publicly everywhere in a city somewhere.

When you think about it, it's a genius form of demonstration. I mean, remind the world that this is a plant that comes from nature, just like their fucking petunias and bugonias. And you know what, it used to grow wild just like this around us for thousands of years - and nothing fucking happened! Hell didn't freeze over and people just lived their fucking lives without freaking out about a plant growing somewhere.

Well, maybe the authorities are aware of this, but want to use those demonstrations for their own purposes by instilling public fear about such plantations actually being meant for drug production. I mean, many if not most people believe that the plant's leaf - which symbolizes cannabis culture - is the actual drug, (including, apparently, Arnold Schwarzenegger, which is strange, since he has been known to toke up as well). Heck, the reason those plants disappeared is probably because some clueless persons are drying the plant's leaves in this very moment in the hopes of having a nice smoke of them later :D.

So there you go, reckless criminals put drugs in reach of everyone, including children! I bet there are enough people who do not realize how ridiculous this actually is and now are more opposed to cannabis than before.

This is the reason i am not convinced those cannabis planting campaigns will have any positive effect: Those who are opposed to legalization now will not be convinced it is harmless just because they have seen a hemp plant. They are opposed to it because they believe in specific (mis-)information given to them by specific sources and those sources will have no problem to construe the plantings as another bit of proof of the harm and disorder caused by cannabis.
