The owners have had their shop in Ballyshannon broken into and looted and their shop in Sligo burnt to the ground also.

Who hates the headshops/customers so much and why?

There's a long story behind it, there's protests outside some of them by parents who, not even knowing what exactly they're selling for a start, are chanting 'save the children' and 'close all headshops now', search the Book of Faces for 'Petition to close the headshops' for some hilarious photos. But these aren't the people laying pipe bombs, there's serving members of the Garda protesting with these eejits so they're not going too far.

Then there's the disgruntled 17 year olds who aren't being served, I've seen some of these first hand on the streets of Dublin and they look strung out waiting outside the shops asking everyone who passes to go in and buy them something. Again I don't think these are the culprits.

The unofficial word is that it's paramilitaries-for-hire. South of the border there isn't much of a following for 'the cause' anymore and they've a shit load of time to kill. No official source has pointed the finger loudly but it's more than likely the case. But pipe bombs and fire bombs are not the method of Joe Public!

pipe bombs being sold by ex-paramillitaries to drug dealers for a grand or so a time apparently.

or else the know-how to make them (yes i know, how stupid are the dealers).

the reason most of them dont go off is because they dont contain detonators, these are too precious for paramillitaries/ex-paras to give to plain old drug dealers.

This fails to state "explosive device"... just a device... an improvised one at that.
