Waterbury, Conn. (WTNH) - A West Hartford doctor is facing manslaughter charges following the overdose death of his patient.

Ven Hsu, 67, is also charged with illegally supplying drugs.

Police began their investigation in April of 2009 after a 35-year old woman died in Waterbury as a result of multiple drug toxicity. They say Hsu prescribed the patient a combination of pain medications and muscle relaxers that far exceeded treatment for any medical prescription.

"An independent medical expert who reviewed the case determined that the dosages prescribed by Hsu were outside the scope of professional medical practice and directly led to the woman’s death," police said in a press release.

Hsu posted a $75,000 bond and is scheduled to be in court August 3.
