Drunk, high dad leaves baby in oven overnight, police say

A Kentucky man high on marijuana and drunk on whiskey put his 5-week-old son in the oven Sunday and left him there overnight, police said.

The oven door was slightly ajar, and the oven was not turned on.

After smoking marijuana at the restaurant where he works as a cook, Larry Long, 33, returned home to share a fifth of whiskey with the baby's mother, Brandy Hatton, McCracken County Sheriff Jon Hayden said in a statement.

Hatton had four or five shots and went to bed while Long finished the bottle, Hayden said.

At 5:30 the next morning, Hatton awoke to the sound of the baby's cries coming from the oven. He had been in it for several hours, police said.

Emergency crews responding to the scene transported the infant to a local hospital, where he was found to be unharmed.

The incident was reported to authorities by a psychiatric facility that Long turned to when he learned what he had done, officials said.

"He actually called a mental health crisis line immediately thereafter and told them that he had done this. And they contacted us," Hayden said.

Police arrested Long and charged him with first degree wanton endangerment. He is being held on bail of $10,000.

Authorities have removed the baby from its mother's care and awarded emergency custody to members of her family.

Long blamed his actions on the marijuana, which he believes was laced with a hallucinatory agent, officials said.

Wow just looking at this guy I can't believe that someone with such obvious care for his personal cleanliness, would be so irresponsible as too do such a thing.... Hmm he seems like such a nice fellow, I think that this is the reason people feel they can bash on recreational drug users and drinkers. This is certainly sad for the child

What part of the photo makes you think this guy is unclean? It seems a bit unfair to come to these conclusions because he has long hair and may be a bit larger than the average person. In my opinion the guys hair looks well conditioned. It is very unfortunate this has happened to the child though.

The fact that he took himself down to the local psychiatric hospital shows that he isn't some careless nut-job. The cannabis may actually have been laced as in the morning he was clearly thinking straight enough to know that putting a baby in an oven is very worrying behaviour.

why did they took the baby away? mother apparently took good care of him. in this case why they dont take the kids who were abducted from parents? pretty retarded and sad. this is not right

i dont think he looks very dirty either, perhaps a shave may be in order thats about it. what a jackass, he must have been smoking some laced weed or something, swim could drink a fifth of whiskey between two people is hardly anything at all.
