Users caught out by the disorientating effects of the latest generation of party pills say they are too strong to be sold over the counter and are dangerous.
3 News spoke to users who say they actually feel safer on illegal drugs than they do on the legal ones.
DMAA is the key ingredient in the new party pills. It became popular when BZP was made illegal in 2008.
But users 3 News spoke to say its effects are unpleasantly over-powering.
“No control, didn't feel comfortable,” says one user.
“I would black out, regain consciousness and just have no idea about my surroundings about four or five times. I don't think it's safe.”
“Avatar” is one of the latest pills. The legal drug has a warning on the packet against mixing it with alcohol; however both are sold over the counter at liquor stores.
“I would feel more secure taking an ecstasy than taking an Avatar,” says the user.
Drug expert Keith Bedford is less concerned with DMAA than other substances but agrees the regulations around it are not ideal.
“Different manufacturers, different suppliers make doses of a different strength so it is hard for people to know what they are getting,” he says.
Another user 3 News spoke to said a key attraction is the price. The pills are $25 for four or $6.25 each.
“…if someone got behind the wheel I don't see how you wouldn't crash,” says the other user.
DMAA has been labelled by the Government as a hazardous substance but it can't be upgrade to “a restricted substance” until an amendment to the Misuse of Drugs Act passes through Parliament.
Until then, many previous users' advice is: just because it's legal, doesn't mean it's safe.

Dear Drugs-Forum readers: We are a small non-profit that runs one of the most read drug information & addiction help websites in the world. We serve over 4 million readers per month, and have costs like all popular websites: servers, hosting, licenses and software. To protect our independence we do not run ads. We take no government funds. We run on donations which average $25. If everyone reading this would donate $5 then this fund raiser would be done in an hour. If Drugs-Forum is useful to you, take one minute to keep it online another year by donating whatever you can today. Donations are currently not sufficient to pay our bills and keep the site up. Your help is most welcome. Thank you.
