The Florence City Council voted Monday to extend the city’s temporary moratorium on medical marijuana dispensaries until July 1, 2011.
The council originally passed a 90-day moratorium in October 2009 and voted to extend it to June 30 in December.
According to the council’s ordinance passed Monday, legal challenges are expected against House Bill 1284, which the state Legislature passed this session.
H.B. 1284 sets out licensing requirements for medical marijuana dispensaries and allows local governments to issue a ban on the facilities.
The City Council “needs and desires more time to evaluate the various local options before proceeding with its own regulations,” according to the ordinance.
A workshop on the subject is scheduled for 6 p.m. July 6, prior to the regular city council meeting.
