The son of former D.C. Mayor Marion Barry has died of a drug overdose.
Marion Christopher Barry, 36, was pronounced dead early Sunday at George Washington University Hospital after an overdose from alcohol and a drug known as “K2,” a local D.C. CBSaffiliate reports.
Barry was partying with friends in a Wellington Park apartment when he collapsed; his friends tried to revive him but were unable. His father also had problems with drugs. Barry Sr., who was mayor from 1979 to 1991 and again from 1995 to 1999, was arrested after a sting operation caught him buying and smoking crack cocaine in 1990. Barry Sr. passed away in 2014.
Barry Jr. also has a history of running afoul of the law. In 2015, he was arrested over an outburst at a bank.
In 2014, he was arrested for driving without a license. In 2013, he was arrested for driving under the influence and possession of marijuana, and also in 2013, he was charged with possession of marijuana and PCP.
Barry Jr. ran for a council seat in the 8th Ward in 2015, which his father used to sit on, but ultimately failed to win the seat.
“Christopher did not have the politician’s gift of being with everybody like his father did but he was a nice young man,” Tom Sherwood, who works for WTOP Washington and covered the Barry family, told the news outlet Sunday.
K2, also known as “spice,” is a synthetic cannabinoid-based drug that is sprayed onto dried plants which the user smokes. It also has a history of overdoses attached to it. The New York Times reported in July that more than 130 people overdosed on the synthetic drug in one week alone.

Dear Drugs-Forum readers: We are a small non-profit that runs one of the most read drug information & addiction help websites in the world. We serve over 4 million readers per month, and have costs like all popular websites: servers, hosting, licenses and software. To protect our independence we do not run ads. We take no government funds. We run on donations which average $25. If everyone reading this would donate $5 then this fund raiser would be done in an hour. If Drugs-Forum is useful to you, take one minute to keep it online another year by donating whatever you can today. Donations are currently not sufficient to pay our bills and keep the site up. Your help is most welcome. Thank you.
