French customs on Friday announced a record drug bust after seizing 1.39 tonnes of cocaine from a sailboat off the Caribbean island of Martinique worth nearly 100 million dollars.
The value of the seized goods are estimated at over 83 million euros on the street, a statement said, adding that it was their biggest-ever drug haul.
The cocaine was found hidden among jute sacks and was probably destined for the European market, it said.
In 2009, the French customs seized more than 5.11 tonnes of cocaine, a nearly 15% rise over 2008.
