Malaysia: 'Hip' Drugs Need Repellent Names
(11 Jul 2006) Gulf Times Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR: A top Malaysian anti-drug official has urged for glamorous-sounding and hip names of party drugs to be dropped and replaced with names highlighting the effects of the drugs, a news report said yesterday.

Designer drugs such as Ecstasy and Ketamine gave the impression of a "trendy and divine" experience for first-time drug users, said northern Kedah state's anti-drug agency spokesman Ariffin Man. Suggested new names for the drugs would be "agony" and "bamboozle", said Ariffin. "Likewise, all opiate drugs should be called organised killers, cannabis as mind destroyers and ketamine as community-paralysing agents," Ariffin was quoted as saying by the Star daily.

He said the distasteful names would act as a psychological repellent to curious youngsters, adding that society ought to reject the names of the drugs which were dictated by drug manufacturers and pushers.

*You could call Ecstasy "Grim F***ing Death" for all SWIM cares, and he would still do it. In SWIM's opinion, if the only reason you're doing a drug is because you like the way it's name sounds, you shouldn't be doing drugs. Period.

Umm... this makes SWIM feel like dropping some agony, then maybe do a few lines of bamboozle and smoke some mind destroyer on the comedown.

OMG, what an asswipe. Is it not the Malaysian government that sentence smalltime drug-users to death? Ariffin Man must be delusional.
If he wants to find the real "organized killers" then all he's got to do is pull his head out of his ass and take a quick look around.

    What a waste of time....

Even if they did "officially" change the drug names I highly doubt it would lead to anything more than people looking like idiots...

And not to mention dangerous due to people not knowing what the drug actually is besides "agony" "mind destroyer"....

I would like to say, Ariffin Man, you are one stupid SOB....you need to lay off the bamboozle and get your head straight!!

4-MTA instantly became very popular after it was named flatliners.

This really is a pathetic ploy to brain-wash youngsters into letting others think for them. Downright disgraceful.

Ok, Ecstasy does have a somewhat self-advertising name, but what about Ketamine, Amphetamine, Cocaine, Heroin, LSD, Psilocybin, Mescaline etc.? Do these dumb fuckers really think that these drugs are popular because of their names? Psilocybin isn't good because it is called that, like I said in another post, the magic is in the brew, not the name.
If anything, calling certain substances Death, Creepers, Brainfry, Erectile Dysfunction would not make rebellious kids stay away from them, it would make them say: Fuck Yeah!! Lets freebase some death!
If all their negative propaganda hasn't worked until now how the hell would this change anything but the name?
It would be a pain in the ass for doctors also:"I'm sorry miss, but your son has ADD and needs to be treated with Death, if that doesn't work we'll try Mindfuck."

Actually, I change my mind, I'm all for this.

    lol lmao!!!

    hahahahaha, thats hilarious.

I don't see how it could work in practice though. The government can call a drug a certain name all it wants but people always have their own slang for it. The names they picked are great though :p

it sounds like some negative twist on newspeak (a softening of negative language, ex: bad=ungood) from George Orwell's book,1984. they're using the power of slang to mess with people's thoughts and feelings just like in the book

the malaysian government really has to start giving its country men and women more credit......few people are gullable enough to believe such propaganda.
