Springfield, Ill. (KMOV.com) -
Would you allow your underage teen have an alcoholic drink in your presence when you're out to dinner?
That's what's being proposed by some lawmakers in Illinois.
"Why not? If they are with their parents as long as they are responsible if they can vote, why not? They can serve in the military? Why can't they have a glass of wine or beer? "says Bradley Hammonds.
That's the thinking behind a new proposal that would allow people as young as 18 to be served wine or beer at restaurants, but there's a catch: they have to have mom and dad's permission, and no hard liquor allowed.
One 16-year-old said she's all for it. "18-years-old in high school already are drinking without their parents permission. They might as well have permission to do it," says Jada McCulloutch.
But her aunt has a different take.
"I think the age limit needs to stay 21. 18 and under, is too young, even if you are with your parents," says Crystal Collins.
If passed, Illinois would join 10 states that already have this law in place.
"We are located near Scott Air Force Base, so it seems to me that if you can serve your country at 18 you should be able to have a beer at 18," says Michael Durso, owner of Hop House in O'Fallon,Illinois.
The bill is sponsored by two Chicago area lawmakers. Right now, it's being looked over in the state house.
