Italian police seize cocaine worth E24m
Italian police seized some 200kg of cocaine worth E24 million ($A39.17 million) in a raid on a ship in the southern port of Gioia Tauro, a senior official told AFP on Thursday.
"The cocaine was stashed in six bags hidden on a ship that arrived from Ecuador, at the back of a container carrying bananas," said Major Luca Barbara of the Italian financial police.
The drugs, with a market value of about E24 million ($A39.17 million), were said to be on their way to northern Italy, according to the police investigation.
Police and customs officers made the bust as they checked vessels travelling on known drug smuggling routes between South America and Europe, Barbara said.
