Lady Gaga says she almost died taking “bags and bags” of cocaine and LSD at the start of her music career.

The multi-million selling pop singer admitted she took drugs in an attempt to follow in the footsteps of famously debauched geniuses like Sir Mick Jaggerand Andy Warhol.

Gaga, who makes the revelations in an upcoming autobiography, said: "I thought I was gonna die. I wanted to BE the artists I loved, like Mick Jagger and Andy Warhol - and I thought the only way to do it was to live the lifestyle.”

However, she says she saw sense when she thought of her auntie who died young.

“I realised my father's sister Joanne, who'd died at 19, had instilled her spirit in me,” Gaga explained. “She was a painter and a poet - and I had a spiritual vision I had to finish her business."

Elsewhere in the book, Gaga describes her most terrifying LSD trip as the moment she thought she met Radiohead's Thom Yorke.

Lady Gaga kicks off the UK leg of her Monster Ball Tour at the Manchester Evening News Arena on February 18th.

Lady Gaga: Aunt who died young saved me from drugs

Lady Gaga was saved from cocaine addiction by the spirit of her dead aunt.

The eccentric star has revealed her life spiralled into a world of heavy drug use in a bid to replicate the lifestyles of her musical idols.

The ‘Paparazzi’ singer would lock herself in her bedroom and snort “bags and bags” of cocaine for songwriting inspiration when she was starting out, but realised she was jeopardising her life when she recalled her aunt Joanne who died at 19.

Gaga – real name Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta – said: “I thought I was going to die. I wanted to be the artists I loved, like Mick Jagger and Andy Warhol, and I thought the only way to do it was to live the lifestyle. My cocaine soundtrack was always The Cure. I would lock myself in my room and listen to ‘Never Enough’ on repeat while I did bags and bags of cocaine.

“But then I realised my father’s sister Joanne, who died at 19, had instilled her spirit in me. She was a painter and a poet – and I had a spiritual vision I had to finish her business.”

The 23-year-old pop beauty – who began experimenting with cocaine and the hallucinogenic drug LSD after she dropped out of her course at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts when she was 20 – insists her late auntie is still a huge influence on her career.

Gaga – who won two Grammys last weekend – added in new biography ‘Lady Gaga: Just Dance: The Biography’ by Helia Phoenix: “I never met her, but she’s been one of the most important figures in my life.”

That's the most powerful anti-drugs message ever. If you do coke and acid you'll end up writing songs like Poker Face.

Maybe I'm old fashioned but I'm from a time when you had to produce more than 2 albums and be over age 25 before you qualified to "write" (sign off on) an autobiography. What's next? "Heroin Kills, The Life and Times of The Jonas Brothers"?

OR, and here goes my conspiracy theory mind working overtime, anyone else think there's about to be some big tabloid "expose" about "Lady Gaga Takes Drugs (and not just the ones to shrink her cock)", and she's entering damage control mode?

lady gaga is strait up scary in my opinion. i dont think ive really heard one of her songs, at least not to my knowledge. i dont think she will ever be like mick jagger or andy worhol, no matter how hard she tries.

She must've done a LOT of acid, she's a pretty tripped out person, judging by her
outfits and the crazy shit she wears o_o

This is a great bit of PR for a record-whore. Swim knows musicians to have a history of drug abuse, it happens in most famous musicians, and to a point, they all party hard, but normal people do that too... it just thrills the public to think that a singer is crazy like them or perhaps even more mysterious...

she probably doesn't write too much of her stuff and if she does write, she certainly doesn't produce or engineer any of her background music or song structure... so she took LSD to be a record lable puppet who lives on a contract... we all know how much her music crosses the borders of creativity... isnt that why it won a grammy... (grammys=joke)

Most famous musicians unless on their own accord and record label/tour promoters cannot be high or drunk on stage unless negotiated in contract due to a binding contract they sign when touring, best believe that the executives would not be happy to see their cash-cow licking windows on stage frying their face off, it may lead to good publicity, but also may have tour sponsors pulling money due to bad image.

but god knows she got a surge in sales due to this somehow. no publicity is bad publicity... well... to a point I guess.
