Watauga sheriff, other agencies seize giant cache of LSD

BOONE -- The Watauga County Sheriff's Office and other agencies have seized 4,800 hits of LSD in a combined undercover investigation, Sheriff Len Hagaman said yesterday.

Hagaman said that it is the largest seizure of LSD in the nation so far this year.

The seizures were made Feb. 3 through an investigation led by the special-operations division of the sheriff's office. The names of people involved have not been released because the investigation is continuing and more arrests are expected.

Sheriff's detectives asked for help from the Orange County Sheriff's Office in arresting a number of suspects, including a student at Appalachian State University who is suspected of arranging the LSD shipment from a supplier, Hagaman said.

Raleigh police and the N.C. Highway Patrol also assisted.

    4,800 doses of LSD seized

An undercover operation originating in Watauga has ended in New Hanover County with the largest LSD seizure year to date in the nation.

Watauga County Sheriff's Office special operations division coordinated with the Raleigh Police Department, Orange County Sheriff's Office and the N.C. Highway Patrol during the investigation.

WCSO detectives arranged for 5,000 doses of Lysergic Acid Diethylamide (LSD) to be delivered and purchased. Through the course of the investigation, multiple people were arrested, including on Appalachian State University student responsible for arranging the LSD purchase.

A total of 4,800 doses of the drug were seized with an estimated street value of $48,000.

From the original investigation started in Watauga, the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office conducted a second operation that resulted in the seizure of 13 pounds of hallucinogenic mushrooms, 12 and a half pounds of marijuana, approximately $13,000 in cash and one handgun. Buncombe County Sheriff's Office and the Raleigh Police Department assisted in the second operation.

In 2009, the WCSO special operations division led the entire nation for the largest LSD seizure which totaled 1,581 dosage units/hits. The seizure of the LSD was through an undercover operation which resulted in the arrest of two individuals, one of whom was an ASU student.

The names of the individuals involved has not yet been released and more arrests are expected to follow in the ongoing investigation.

a sad point to keep in mind here- they will most likely be charged by the weight of the paper. While the 4,800 doses probably contains at most 1/2gram of actual LSD, a typical 900 hit "page" weighs in at ~4.5 grams. So they are looking at charges for 24 grams of LSD. (which in reality would be 240,000 doses) 10 grams = 10 year mandatory minimum, not sure where 24g would put it.

This has proven an incredible incentive for folks to sing like canaries and a cut deals.
