Police arrested Khalid Awal at the Smart Mart on Highland for selling more than gas and snacks.
I'm surprised, exclaimed customer Ayanna Moon. "Because he was so quiet he really didn't say anything.
The 26-year-old man is charged with possession with intent to sell a drug called khat.
The plant is an addictive stimulant that causes euphoria and is used to fight fatigue.
Users can chew it, smoke it or brew it in tea.
The Memphis Police Department's Organized Crime Unit says it found 94 grams of khat in Awal's car.
Another 93 grams were found in a plastic bag inside the store.
Despite the Monday morning bust, employees at the store aren't talking about the illegal activity Awal is charged with.
We have no idea about that. said one employee. We just got here.
Police say they're not sure if Awal was dealing out of the store.
But they do know he was dealing. In addition to the khat, they say they also found a couple hundred dollars in cash on him.
They said they made the bust while checking to see if the store was following liquor laws.
