Man on 'bad trip' found hugging tree in Santa Cruz

SANTA CRUZ — A man high on LSD was jailed Monday night after people called 911 to report a disturbance near Ocean Street and Broadway, police reported.

Jeramiah Long, 23, was hugging a palm tree when officers arrived just before 11 p.m. Long, a transient, reportedly told officers he had taken LSD and was having a "bad trip."

Police said he was "acting erratic and paranoid" and complained that he was seeing strange lights. Long was arrested without incident on suspicion of public intoxication and medically cleared before he was taken to County Jail, according to police. He was released Tuesday morning, jail records showed

Sounds pretty benign to me... just trying to be one with nature. He was probably feeling like shit for abusing the earth and was just apologizing!

    Goddamn tree-huggers!

Sounds like nothing worse than a night in the drunk tank (acid tank?), and probably a fine.

i'm thinking the "bad trip" part started when people gawked at him and called the cops on him. hugging a tree does indeed seem pretty a-ok by me. but a beautiful tree amidst the ridiculous roads and structures of mankind could cause a confusing trip i suppose... unsure what the geographic set-up is like there...

I hug trees sober. I dont see what the big deal is, let the man spread some love.

People staring out of thier windows in the middle of the night would trip N.B. Stoner out to, although it was probably smarter for the man to stay where he was, instead of trying to wander away and falling, or hurting himself unintentionally.
People who dont use/understand what its like of being under the influence of drugs, surprisingly, usually CAUSE the bad trips to happen. Maybe this was another case of that.
Well, as logn as the man sobered up fine, was well hydrated, and was made comfterable as possible in his state, im sure there was no harm done.

Maybe he needed some grounding and coming down from a bad trip.
Its a sad state of affairs when all a man wants is to hug a tree and to recover from feeling bad and is thrown in jail for harming none.

    I agree.

I don't understand why they couldn't just make sure he got home safely instead of arresting him.

    Totally agree!!!!!!

The bad trip surely was already a scary situation by itself but the police, [SARCASM] always ready to serve and protect, [/SARCASM] decided to add a night in jail to the equation just to make the experience more traumatic for the guy. Great job :applause:

Man high on LSD arrested again in Santa Cruz

SANTA CRUZ - A Santa Cruz transient arrested last week when he was high on LSD and hugging a palm tree was picked up by police again Tuesday night, officers reported.
Jeramiah Long, 23, allegedly was yelling and causing a disturbance on the 800 block of Riverside Avenue around 11 p.m. Again, he told police he had taken LSD, according to Santa Cruz police spokesman Zach Friend.

Long allegedly was acting aggressive, so officers arrested him and drove him to County Jail. On the way there, he kicked the inside of the police cruiser and made threats. Then, at the jail Long refused to get out of the patrol car and threatened to kick people in the face, Friend reported.

Eventually, he was removed and booked into jail for public intoxication.

Someone who isn't me grew up in Santa Cruz and may or may not live there currently. This part of town – Ocean & Broadway – has seen a recent onslaught of gang and drug related violence crimes recently, with two separate murders happening at that exact intersection in the last 2 months. Lots of unrelated drug dealing and gang activity has spurred around that area as well. This could have something to do with the quick-to-dial-911 residents and the reason his arrest was followed through with.

Its really too bad, SWIM tells me, as fear, violence, and the local media are really transforming this wonderful little city from a strange, liberal, and open-minded community into just another overly policed American shit stop.

Funny though, minus the arrest part this would be a near-everyday sighting in Santa Cruz. :vibes:

Reminds me of when I was a child and I was told 'If you ever get lost in the woods hug a tree.'

Yeah, the 'bad trip' most definetly started when he was torn apart from his new-found bond with nature by strangers in uniforms, handcuffed, and then brought into the strip-lit hell that is any police station.

Swim's had good and bad trips on acid. It was on the best one's that he hugged trees.........

Seriously! SWIM couldn't even imagine a night inside county jail with a head full of acid. Sounds like a total nightmare especially if the night was going poorly beforehand.

SWIM knows a poor soul who took copious amount (5 hits, 7g, absolutely absurd though it varys from source to source from what SWIMs heard.) of LSD and psilocybin mushrooms and was apprehended and found in possession of marijuana in a parking lot just blocks from his sources flat on a summer night. Apparently he looked "suspicious" crossing over the short 3ft fence wooden fence(even though he could have walked 20 ft out of his way) around the parking lot by the basketball courts behind his apartments.

Poor soul, he probably just jumped for the pure excitement of feeling like he was flying for about a second.
