A BLACK Country man has been jailed after he was caught smuggling in cannabis through Birmingham Airport in a blow-up doll.
Darren Hughes, aged 26, of Bunkers Hill Lane, Bilston arrived at Birmingham Airport from Amsterdam on September 25, 2011.
He was stopped by Border Force officers and his baggage was searched. His bag contained a lifesize female blow-up doll wearing lingerie, which was stuffed with 91.2 grams of potent skunk cannabis with an estimated street value of £657.
Hughes said that he saw the Class B drug in the blow up-doll on a train in Amsterdam and decided to bring it back to the UK even though he knew it was illegal to do so.
He was arrested on suspicion of the importation of a controlled substance.
Hughes appeared at Solihull Magistrates Court on February 17 where he pleaded guilty.
He was bailed pending sentencing, but was arrested again whilst on bail for burglary.
Hughes appeared at Wolverhampton Crown Court this week and was jailed for 17 months for burglary and four months imprisonment for the drugs offence.
Dawn Cartwright, Border Force senior investigation officer, said: "This man’s attempts to smuggle skunk in a blow-up doll were foiled by our officers who are in the frontline of the fight to stop drugs, weapons, contraband and illegal immigrants entering the UK.
"Using the very latest technology, they are on constant alert to keep them out of the country."
Anyone with information about suspected smuggling activity should call Border Force on 0800 595 000.
