Mother of boy in methadone death sentenced
ROANOKE, Va., July 3 (UPI) -- A Virginia mother whose 3-year-old son died from drinking methadone she illegally bought for herself was convicted of second-degree murder, authorities said.
Lisa Michelle Hylton, 39, was also convicted of child neglect, and a jury sentenced her to 10 years in prison on each charge Friday, The Roanoke Times reported.
Hylton told the jury she bought 2 ounces of methadone for $66 to get off of strong painkillers, the newspaper said.
Thinking she had been shorted, she testified, she used a measuring cup from a bottle of cold remedy she had been giving her son Trevor to measure the methadone.
She left the cup on a kitchen counter where Trevor found and drank it, the jury heard.
Hylton stuck her fingers down her son's throat to get him to throw up, she said, and thought he had thrown up most of the drug and would sleep off the rest of it.
Fourteen hours later she called 911 when the child stopped breathing, and paramedics could not save him, the Times reported.
Hylton's father testified his daughter was punishing herself more than any prison sentence could.
"What bothers her," James Hylton testified, "is having to remember for the rest of her life. That boy's gone. That boy's dead.
