Nigeria: Ndlea Nabs Guinean Over N69 Million Cocaine At Lagos Airport

Lagos — National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), said it has arrested a Guinean trader Soumah Bountou with 6.350kg of pure cocaine worth over N69 million at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.

The drug, the agency said is the purest and single highest seizure of cocaine made by the Airport Command of the agency this year.

The suspect, Bountou a 44 year old trader from Guinea that imported the drug was caught on Saturday September 19, 2009 at about 10.30pm on an Iberia flight from Brazil and that the drug was concealed industrially in makeup kits and packed in two black bags.

The French speaking suspect, Bountou told NDLEA agents that she used to travel to Cameroon and Ivory Coast to buy clothes and wigs where she met her sponsors.

"I am a widow, my husband died in 2004 leaving me and my daughter who is now 22 years. The man that introduced me to drugs said that I should be going to Europe to buy my wares and I was excited about going to Brazil. They paid my travel expenses and somebody even received me when I arrived. I thought they were being nice unfortunately, it turned out to be drug trafficking", she stated forcing back tears.

Impressed with the arrests and seizures, the Chairman/Chief Executive of the Agency, Ahmadu Giade reiterated his commitment to dislodge illegal drug syndicates on Brazil, Guinea and Nigeria routes, just as he urged members of the public to be weary of tricks employed by drug barons.

According to him, "Success can be achieved anywhere. When people offer to sponsor your trip to Europe and you are suspicious, discreetly contact the nearest NDLEA office. By so doing, we will be able to nip the plot in the bud".

The other three suspects according to Alhaji Idris Bello, NDLEA Assistant Airport Commander in Charge of Operations and Intelligence, are Mbamalo Vincent Chukwudi, 27, a phone engineer, Uche James Udeh, 35, and Ayodele Abiola a.k.a. Kaba Mohammed, 41 who are traders.
