OTTAWA — Police arrested 103 people and seized stolen explosives, illicit narcotics, some 400 prohibited firearms and money in raids across Canada Thursday morning, dismantling a major drug ring.
“We have succeeded in neutralizing this network,” a Quebec police spokesman said in a televised news conference.
More than a thousand police officers from the Surete du Quebec, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and several local police forces were involved in the dawn raids in 30 towns and cities in British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec provinces.
They nabbed 103 out of 128 suspects in the ongoing investigation, seized Can$225,000 (US$225,860) in cash, as well drug tablets, cannabis, cocaine and ingredients for a so-called date-rape drug. A court also froze assets worth Can$1.2 million.
Police said the criminal group distributed 75 kilograms (165 pounds) of cocaine per week, and sold Can$50 million worth of drugs just in the last six months.
Charges include importing and trafficking of cocaine from Mexico, and gangsterism.
