That is the only time I've ever heard of khat being busted in the USA let alone the largest. Guess I don't pay attention to the news much, or that scene just isn't around here.

Wow... wonder if the khat was going to be used traditionally, or was for a chemist. Plurhaps this has something to do with the popularity of Mephedrone and other cathinone/methcathinone derivatives.
The article calls khat an amphetamine, but it is my understanding that this isnt accurate. Amphetamine is amphetamine, and there are analogues/derivations/structurally similar chemicals like methamphetamine or MDMA, but technically it is not accurate to label these chemicals amphetamines. I am no chemist however, am I understanding this correctly?

It was the largest for that area- not the US. Largest I'm aware of happened in Seattle some years ago, a khat smuggling ring busted by the feds and over 1,000 pounds seized and somewhere around 50 people arrested, if memory serves. It remains very popular in many east african and middle eastern immigrant communities.

Khat itself is unscheduled federally, and Oklahoma I think is the only state where it is specifically outlawed. Cathinone however is federally a Schedule I drug, so importers/smugglers seem to be the target of law enforcement. If memory serves most if not all of those busted in the seattle operation beat the charges (though I may be wrong on this)
