Police Make Largest Khat Drug Bust in Fairfax County History
FAIRFAX COUNTY - Fairfax County Police have made what is believed to be the largest seizure of khat in department history.
The bust was made by on officer on Saturday in Falls Church, Va. when he observed a man purchasing khat on the street from another man. 21 pounds of khat was seized at that location.
The investigation led to the home of one of the suspects where an additional 111 pounds of khat was found.
Khat is an amphetamine. It is a flowering evergreen shrub native to East Africa and the Arabian Peninsula.
Typically, it is chewed like tobacco, though it can be smoked and sprinkled on food.
Ahmed Omer Abdujelel, 45, of Annandale Road has been charged with distribution and distribution near a recreation center.
Ali Abdi Hersi, 47, of Washington DC has been charged with possession.
