TEHRAN (FNA)- The Iranian Law Enforcement Police have seized considerable amounts of illicit drugs in several operations in the country's southern province of Fars, a provincial police commander announced on Monday.

Commander of the anti-drug squad of Fars province Mohammad Esmail Mesri told reporters that 285.3 kg of illicit drugs has been seized during four separate police operations in the province.

He added that 119 kg of hashish as well as 10 kg of opium were discovered from a car in Shiraz, the provincial capital city. Police have arrested the driver.

Mesri stated that his forces had seized 100 kg of Naas - a chewing narcotic - from an inter-city passenger bus near the city of Sarvestan, and added that another 57 kg of opium was seized by the anti-drug squad near Shiraz.

Earlier on January, Commander of the anti-drug squad of Iran's Law Enforcement Police announced that his forces had discovered 340 tons of different types of illicit drugs during nine months of operations across the country.

"More than 340 tons of drugs have been seized all over Iran in the past nine months," General Hamid Reza Hossein-Abadi said.

The United Nations credits Iran with the seizure of 80 percent of the opium netted around the world.

Since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, the Iranian police have lost more than 3300 of their personnel in the country's combat against narcotics.

During the past Iranian year (ended on March 20,) Iran seized more than 1,000 tons of opium smuggled from Afghanistan, the largest producer of opium poppy in the world.
