Police Seize 750 kg of Illicit Drugs in Southern Iran in One Day
TEHRAN (FNA)- The Iranian Law Enforcement Police announced seizure of large amounts of narcotics in four separate operations carried out in Iran's southern province of Hormozgan on Monday.

Commander of the anti-drug squad of Hormozgan's Law Enforcement Police Amir Rezaei told FNA that the first cargo was seized when police forces suspected a passenger car near the city of Minaab on Monday.

He said that the police forces seized 138 kg of illicit drugs after armed clashes erupted between police and the drug traffickers during which a smuggler was killed.

In another development, Rezaei said, the province's anti-drug squad received tips about another cargo from the Gachin region to the port city of Lenge and seized 489.2 kg of opium.

Regarding the third discovery, Rezaei said that police have seized 101.47 kg of opium from a van during a checkpoint operation at the Kahorestan police station.

He further announced that 5.40 kg of crack as well as 15.10kg of opium were discovered from another car near the city of Roudan.

The commander stated that during the operations 6 drug-traffickers were arrested and 5 cars were sized by the police.

Iran lies on a transit corridor between opium producing Afghanistan and drug dealers in Europe.

The Islamic Republic has emerged as the leading country fighting drug trafficking after making 85 percent of the world's total opium seizures.

The anti-drug squads of the Iranian Law Enforcement Police have intensified their countrywide campaign against drug-trafficking through staging long-term systematic operations in recent months.

The Iranian anti-narcotic police have always staged periodic, but short-term, operations against drug traffickers and dealers, but latest reports - which among others indicate an improved and systematic dissemination of information - reveal that the world's most forefront and dedicated anti-narcotic force (as UN drug-campaign assessments put it) have embarked on a long-term countrywide plan to intensify the crack down on the drug trade since the beginning of the current Iranian year (starting on March 20).
