Police uncover new breed of illegal synthetic drugs

This is an article from earlier this year (2014) as a part of a series of articles involving methylone

PETERBOROUGH – The OPP is issuing a public safety warning regarding the dangers of a new group of synthetic drugs following conclusion of a recent investigation.

In April 2013, OPP Central Region Drug Enforcement Section started an investigation into illegal drugs being imported from China for distribution in the Peterborough area via the Greater Toronto Area.

As a result, OPP along with the Canada Border Services Agency intercepted approximately 60 kilograms of methylone – a base material used in the manufacture of illegal synthetic hallucinogens that mimics the potentially dangerous effects of ecstasy, cocaine and Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (commonly known as MDMA).

Police have now issued arrest warrants for two Toronto residents -- Hamilton Baunder, 32, and Patrick Bushnell, 30. Both are charged with importation of a schedule 1 substance under the Controlled Drug and Substances Act, possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking and conspiracy to commit an indictable offence.

In relation to this investigation, police have also charged two Peterborough residents -- Allison Kingdon, 29, and William Dunbar, 21 -- with possession of cocaine. They will appear in court on July 16.

Methylone is among the illegal controlled substances known as synthetic cathinones -- designer street drugs that include so-called "bath salts”, which have been linked to violent delusions and even death. Users may experience euphoria, appetite suppression, and an increase in energy and focus.

A lowering or loss of inhibitions may also occur. Users may also experience elevated body temperature, increased heart rate, increased breathing, changes in blood pressure, seizures, erratic behaviour and coma.

It always makes me wonder how some articles maintain credibility when they make blunders like making a difference between Ecstacy and MDMA, or thinking Methylone is used in making another product, or that it only mimics potentially dangerous effects. I feel all this only exacerbates the proliferation of potential harmful misinformation, and that with all these media outlets making waves of fear: government are forced into making rapid and misinformed policy changes in response to poorly founded public concern.
But hey, what else are we to expect?

Nowadays only new dangerous drugs wrecking havoc on young children with a value of millions are newsworthy. Otherwise its yesterdays news, insignificant and the freelance journalist will not sell their story or the paper will not consider a story to be newsworthy. Cheap simplistic sensationalism.

In fact its yesterdays journalism which will die out sooner or later. I don't know when you last bought a printed newspaper, but I cant remember how many years ago I bought my last one.

Legals must be avoided, they ruin your brains. I don't have any friends that have tried methylone, haven't even come across it in NZ, but if I did I would push it away from me as fast as I can.

Back when Methylone was 'legal' that fact that it was generally of higher purity than MDMA (which could have been anything but) is what made my cat choose one over the other. The only real difference between the two is a simple Oxygen atom in the same place that differentiates Cathinone from Amphetamine (ketone in the beta position of the amine).
The 'missing link' between Pseudo-ephedrine and Methamphetamine is Methcathinone and that last one was a 'legal' yet I bet you'd take any of the other two if they were given by the drug pushers in white coats. If you gonna shove the Cathinones away because they're less illegal please also reconsider taking any other drug, they all deserve as much caution.
Also Methylone should be a Class C over in NZ (where it was marketed as "Ease")*, does that make it safer for you?

=^.^= (btw Cathinone is found in plants)
