Swim has stopped smoking MJ for quite a while now as swim found that it worsened there schizophrenia. Swim doesn't know if something like this is the cause but would be interested to find out if there was a way to be tested without dying dirst.

I can believe that smoking marijuana might worsen the symptoms of schizophrenia, but if this is true,

"Heavy marijuana use, particularly in adolescence, appears to be associated with an increased risk for the later development of schizophrenia..."

the answer is not to prohibition but regulation. As with all these schizophrenia- cannabis studies which are attracting funding, there is no causal link established.

Swim doesn't balem MJ for there problems just knows it worsens them.

Interesting hypothesis. But this would also put Valium (diazepam) in the camp of contenders for a specious causal link to development of schizophrenia. As well as a plethora of other things.

I've taken people who were suffering mental illness off pot before. This was related to it's prolonging the symptomology they were exhibiting. It was never connected with causing their symptoms. Once they had landed and were up and running, many went back to smoking pot without ill effect. We knew what was causative - a genetic predisposition and severe emotional trauma. Not one of them would disagree.

Swim would agree about the severe emotional trauma but couldn't say as to genetics. Would be intersted to find out.

A very clear distinction needs to be made when assessing this study. Cannabis use may create an increased risk in schizophrenics but that's not to say it's the direct cause of the condition. I could imagine the tabloids moulding this one into another scare headline.

As with the discredited gateway theory, I wonder how many schizophrenics have taken alcohol, not to mention sedatives?

These people are just looking for funding.
