Hi guys.

«Spice» drugs on the market. From Sylvia Karakatsani.

A gate to the hell of drugs is the web.
Users are informing from the web and forums for anything new that are currently on the market and have easy access to electronic stores that are selling more than 200 psychotropic substances. Often these substances are referred as <<legal>> or vegetal but in reality they are very dangerous and under the same legal status as controlled drugs. The most popular <<legal>> drugs is Salvia Divinorum, Kratom, Argyreia nervosa, hallucinogen mushrooms and sundry recreational pills. These substances, that are available for sold through the web, are advertised to have effects similar to the controlled drugs.
The definition of psychotropic substance include any artificial or natural substance that have the ability to alter emotion, the level of the perception or the brain function of the user. It includes legal and common acceptable substances like alcohol, caffeine and tobacco but also illegal or unusual substances like cocaine and psilocybin.

Warning System.
The “National Center of documentation and informing about drugs”(ncdiad), mentioned, in his documentation for the April month, that in new psychotropic substances that come up on the market, included chemical compounds, which are produced in labs, but also natural substances and new drug using ways of the known substances. As expected, these new substances and new drug using ways, is a threat for the public health and a challenge for the politic against drugs since there’s insufficient scientific documentation and legal protection against those substances.
There are few countries that have observation systems that are sensitive enough so they can detect new drug using ways and the same time there are some difficulties with the methods that are used for the observation of such behaviors. As a respond to that phenomenon the “Early warning system“ (EWS) was build, which purpose is group action for exchange information, the evaluation of the dangers and the control of the new substances. The Cyprus is active member of the EWS via the ncdiad. For this purpose it created a wide network of co-operators, which are always in communication and are regularly make sessions. The EWS of Cyprus, started to operate from 2004 and since then it is receiving and sending useful information to and from its co-operation network. The co-operators have password to access the database which display concisely the main data for the new synthetic substances in Europe.
Synthetic cannabis.
A new kind of drug appeared last year in European market. According to ncdiadtheseare packets and sachets which contain, like indicated, a {herbal mix}} for smoking, which gives to smoker an effect similar with marijuana without being illegal. That category of products is named {{spice}} and the small package is very attractive to young peoples. The authorities of the members states of European union did not wait along and analyzed those products. First analyses that performed in Germany and Austria showed that they contain the ingredient JWH-018- a synthetic substance which is made in chemical lab and it is synthetic cannabis.
Psychotics events.
As established, the synthetic cannabis is mixed with the herb althea officionalis, which is herb with therapeutic properties(antiphlogistic). In addition, several other active psychoactive ingredients have been found in spice, which until now was sold through the web. First reports from users are confirming that that drug can lead to psychotic events end panic attacks. The authorities of the members states of European union are prohibit the import and sell of the synthetic cannabis and first of all Germany, Austria and France.

Arrived in Cyprus.
The ncdiadin Lisbon began the observation of the drug {{spice}} at the early of 2008 and indicated in special report that 37 percent of the online stores sold it as {{legal high}}. Although the existence of the synthetic cannabis on Cyprus market was not confirmed is suspected that the product may exist in our country.

Well I don’t know what they mean with the phrase “νέα πρότυπα χρήσης ουσιών” in Greek but I translated it as “new drug using ways”.
