Teacher who glorified drugs banned from classroom for life

A physics teacher glorified drug use on social media - leading to a pupil developing a "very favourable attitude" towards substance abuse.

Ashley Matto, 25, has been banned from teaching for life after being found guilty of unacceptable professional conduct at Hammersmith Academy - a specialist media secondary school.

He joined as a newly-qualified teacher in September 2013 and resigned in March 2014 following allegations he sent pupils a link to Reddit where he had posted about drugs.

Posting under the username ashleymatto, titles of his posts included 'LSD + Xanax + Coke = Weed + Alcohol + Electronic music xD'.

On March 24 last year he emailed pupils a link to the website to show them an image demonstrating advances in science but pupils could, and did, access his comments.

Dr Robert Cawley, panel chair for the National College of Teaching and Leadership (NCTL), said it resulted in a pupil having a "very favourable attitude to the use of drugs, including class A drugs" and demonstrated the teacher had recently used drugs.

Matto also sent a text message to a colleague implying he had taken recreational drug, DMT, reports Get West London.

NCTL official Paul Heathcote said: “He has not shown any remorse or insight and has given no other indication that his attitude to drugs and misuse of social media is likely to change.”

Matto has a right of appeal to the High Court.

I'm a bit confused here about exactly what happened (maybe I need to go to bed; it's late).

From what I'm getting, he sent his pupils a link to a perfectly reasonable, non drug-related reddit post that he had made, and some of the kids started investigating his userpage and found previous comments he'd made to one of the drug subreddits?

His crime here appears to be failing to protect his privacy online (using his real name to discuss illegal things does sound pretty stupid). Social media (which apparently now includes reddit somehow) seems to have been a great boon to those who want more control over individuals: it incites people to incriminate themselves if they're not careful. Keep a separate account for discussing anything you wouldn't want your grandmother or the local police reading about.

As for the child developing a positive attitude towards class A drugs: I'd be more worried about them developing a positive attitude to alcohol, which is an absolutely massive problem amongst our nation's youth that completely dwarves illegal drug use. It's probably the number 1 problem, in fact. I'd be more worried still about them developing a positive attitude towards electronic music. But that's just my opinion.

Maybe he should of posted a message telling them about FRANK and how Jesus will save them from the evils of drugs. In the end though, its not about the war on drugs, its a war on peoples freedom and minds, it they who want to control us all.
