Startling new reports claim that teenagers have found a new way to get high that involves Burt’s Bees brand lip balm.
According to reports, the latest way that teens have found they can get high is by applying Burt’s Bees lip balm to their eyelids. Most would agree that this seems like a ridiculous thing to do, but the new fad called “Beezin” reportedly gives kids the same feeling they would get if they were drunk or stoned. Still, doctors are warning teens that this may not be safe for their eyes if it is continued.
"The peppermint oil in the lip balm is a very strong irritant and can cause inflammation in the eye redness of the eye swelling," said Dr. Brett Cauthen to Oklahoma City’s KOKH.
While teens may view this latest trend to be harmless since Burt’s Bees is made from natural products, experts say that using the lip balm for anything other than what it is supposed to be used for is the dangerous part.
"Our big message is natural does not equate with safety," said Dr. Cauthen.
Truman Claytor, an Ohio alcohol and drug therapist, told WNWO that trends like this can sometimes lead teens towards harder drugs and alcohol.
"Kids look for trends and they find it on Facebook and YouTube and they get into that stuff and start experimenting," said Claytor.
Experts are warning parents to look for warning signs that include random changes in behavior.
