Texan found in Kansas with 436,000 ecstasy pills

WICHITA | A 21-year-old Texas man faces federal drug charges after authorities say he was found with 436,000 Ecstasy pills.

Edgar Juarez of San Antonio is charged with possession with intent to distribute the Ecstasy.

U.S. Attorney Lanny Welch said Thursday the crime is alleged to have occurred last year in Ellis County.

Juarez initially was arrested by the Kansas Highway Patrol during a traffic stop on Interstate 70. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison and a fine up to $1 million.

Welch's office also announced federal indictments of 17 other people, including Felipe Ruiz, of Norwich, Conn., who was arrested after allegedly landing his plane at the airport in Liberal with a load of cocaine.

Federal charges filed in big ecstasy bust

WICHITA -- Federal charges have been filed against the man who allegedly tried to hide out in Hays from authorities who eventually found 436,000 ecstasy pills in the trunk of the car he was driving.

Edgar E. Juarez, 21, San Antonio, was charged Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Wichita with possession with intent to distribute the pills, about 236 pounds.

The drugs had a street value of about $7.8 million.

Juarez initially had been charged in Ellis County District Court in connection with the Dec. 4 incident. He faces the possibility of 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine.

The arrest was made after the Kansas Highway Patrol pulled over a U-Haul truck that had been following too close behind a Cadillac. Once the driver of the U-Haul was ticketed and allowed to go on his way, the trooper pulled off Interstate 70 on the Vine Street exit to check on the Cadillac, which also had pulled off, parking at a convenience store.

"He ended up fleeing from the officer on foot," Ellis County Attorney Tom Drees said of Juarez, soon after he was bound over for trial on the local charges.

Police said Juarez had tried to hide out in a room at a nearby motel.

The trooper then asked for the sheriff's office to bring its drug dog to the location, and the dog indicated the presence of drugs. The stash of ecstasy was found in the trunk of the car.

And all he had to do was play it cool and make small talk with the cop....such a waste really, because now all those pills are just going to be destroyed or sit in the evidence room

Man Pleads Guilty to Possessing 200 Lbs. of Ecstasy

WICHITA, KAN - A Texas man pleaded guilty on Thursday to federal drug charges after he was found to have over 200 pounds of Ecstasy in the trunk of his car during a fuel stop on I-70 in Kansas.

Edgar E. Juarez, 21, of San Antonio, Texas, was charged with one count of possesion with intent to distribute over 436,000 pills of MDMA (Ecstasy). A Kansas Highway Patrol trooper approached Juarez at a fuel stop on Highway I-70 in Ellis County in December of last year.

According to prosecutors, when the trooper told Juarez he was going to call for a drug dog, Juarez fled on foot, entering the station's building on one side and exiting on the other. He was later arrested at a laundry room of a nearby hotel.

Investigators say that they found 44 bags of Ecstasy in the trunk of the Cadillac Juarez was driving.

Juarez faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $1 million. He is set to be sentenced in July.
