TIJUANA, Mexico – Mexican security forces are announcing the seizure of 105 tons of marijuana.

Army Gen. Alfonso Duarte Mujica says the pot was seized in 10,000 packages in the border city of Tijuana. He says 11 suspects have been arrested.

Duarte Mujica spoke Monday at a news conference in the city across the border from San Diego, California.

The bust far surpasses any marijuana seizure in Mexico of the past few years.

Mexican authorities seize 105 tons of marijuana

TIJUANA, Mexico – Mexican security forces seized 105 tons of U.S.-bound marijuana in the border city of Tijuana on Monday, by far the biggest drug bust in the country in recent years.
Soldiers and police grabbed the drugs in pre-dawn raids in three neighborhoods after police arrested 11 people following a shootout, army Gen. Alfonso Duarte Mujica said at a news conference.
The marijuana was found wrapped in 10,000 packages, which were displayed to journalists by soldiers in masks. Duarte said the drug had an estimated street value in Mexico of 4.2 billion pesos, about $340 million.

The bust began when Tijuana municipal police on a routine patrol came under gunfire from a convoy of vehicles. One police officer and one suspect were injured.
Police arrested 11 people who were traveling in the convoy and called the army and state police for reinforcement, Duarte said.

The detainees led the security forces to three different Tijuana neighborhoods where the drugs were found in tractor trailers and houses.
Duarte said local criminal gangs were receiving the drugs to smuggle into the United States. He did not identify any of the gangs.

The bust dwarfed marijuana seizures of recent years. This year, there have been several seizures of about a dozen tons of marijuana in Tijuana, which is across the border from San Diego, California.

Haha, seriously. Well the picture has changed again, now it is a mexican police officer in full riot gear surrounded by hundreds of boxes of the seized marijuana, which is fair. To be honest, the only reason I posted that pic (and noticed it) was someone in the comments remarked, "why include a picture of heroin in a story about marijuana?"

edit: looks like balzafire has already updated to the new pictures. Still irks me that they used the heroin pic for a few hours during the day though.

    Mexico Makes Major Drug Bust

    Mexico Makes Major Drug Bust
It's the biggest pot haul ever in Mexico's war on drugs.

The Mexican military raided a group of homes in a poor suburb in the border city of Tijuana on Monday.

They seized 105 tons of marijuana with a street value of at least 340 million U.S. dollars.

[General Alfonso Duarte, Commander of Tijuana Army Zone]:
"We obtained the following results: In Tijuana, Baja California, more than 10 thousand marijuana packages weighing 105 tons, six trailers, three heavy vehicles, two pick-ups and two large weapons were seized and eleven people were detained."

Soldiers came under fire at least once as they confiscated the drugs and arrested the suspects.

The marijuana was carefully wrapped, labeled, and ready for distribution in the United States, according to the army.

The bust is a boost for Mexican President Felipe Calderon, whose reputation is staked on his campaign against his country's powerful drug cartels.

The death toll from Calderon's war on drugs has climbed to nearly 30,000 over the past four years.

This puts him under increasing pressure to show results, both at home where alarm is growing among citizens and abroad as Washington and foreign investors are on edge.

Over the past decade, Mexican cartels have grown extremely powerful as violence sparked by cartel rivalries has spread beyond the long-troubled cities into formerly peaceful places.

Mexico is one of the world's top marijuana producers, exporting about 7,000 tons a year.

Together with home-grown heroin they generate an estimated $10 billion in exports.

Security forces seize cannabis worth £216m in Mexico drugs bust

Mexican security forces have seized at least 105 tonnes of US-bound marijuana in the border city of Tijuana, the biggest pot bust in recent years.
Soldiers and police grabbed the drugs in pre-dawn raids in three neighbourhoods after police arrested 11 people following a shoot-out, army General Alfonso Duarte Mujica said at a news conference on Monday evening.

The marijuana was found wrapped in 10,000 packages, which were displayed by soldiers in masks. Gen Duarte said the drugs had an estimated street value in Mexico of $340 million (£216.2m).

He said authorities were still counting the packages and the amount could rise.

The drugs, wrapped in different colours and labelled with apparently coded phrases and pictures including Homer Simpson, would be incinerated after the weighing and counting, the general said.

The bust began when police came under fire from a convoy of vehicles, Gen Duarte said.

Mexico marijuana bust bigger than first thought

The marijuana seized in Mexico's biggest bust ever weighed in at 121.5 tonnes, nearly 30 tonnes more than initially reported, authorities said.

Mexican security forces made the massive seizure on Monday after a shootout with traffickers, 11 of whom were arrested, officials said.

Some 15,300 packets of marijuana were counted, up from 10,000, a day after the drugs were found during raids on several houses in the border city of Tijuana following a shootout, security spokesman Alejandro Poire told a news conference.

This is the largest seizure in the country's history of marijuana prepared and packed for sale and distribution, Mr Poire said.

There are signs that [the drugs] are linked to the Pacific organisation, he said, referring to another name for the Sinaloa gang led by Mexico's most-wanted fugitive, Joaquin El Chapo Guzman.

In announcing the capture on Monday, General Alfonso Duarte said the drugs were worth about $US335 million on the Mexican street, but their value could double or triple if sold in the United States.

The seizure was a coup for Mexico's president Felipe Calderon whose use of the military to crack down on the country's drug cartels has been accompanied by soaring drug violence blamed for 28,000 deaths since 2006.

Across the border, residents of the US state of California are due to vote on November 2 on a referendum over whether to legalise marijuana for recreational use.
