SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — U.S. federal authorities say they have seized 728 pounds (330 kilograms) of cocaine and arrested six men from the Dominican Republic who were aboard a boat traveling toward Puerto Rico.
The interim director of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement office in Puerto Rico said Thursday that the boat was spotted near the northern coastal town of Aguadilla this week. Angel Melendez said it is yet another example that drug traffickers are trying to avoid landing along the island's western coast to evade authorities.
He said a judge has denied bond to all six men, four of whom were previously arrested for living illegally in Puerto Rico.
Authorities said the drugs seized are worth $8 million and were destined for the U.S. and Puerto Rico.
