MDMA provokes an effect in two phases
An important liberation of serotonin
, by stimulating a serotonin/MDMA exchange
at the level of the serotonin
nerve endings, followed by an exhaustion of the serotonin stocks
at the end of few hours. The cerebral serotonin decrease also comes along with a reduction of activity of the tryptophane hydroxylase
, the enzyme responsible for the serotonin synthesis, a reduction which can be much more prolonged than the rate of serotonin.
MDMA also increases the liberation of dopamine in the brain
according to the same mechanism as that described for the liberation of serotonin, even if the affinity of MDMA for the sites of recapture of dopamine is less raised than for the sites of recapture of the serotonin. The second mechanism also acts in the sense of a bigger liberation of dopamine
and the fact that the serotonin released in the synaptic space by MDMA excites dopamine neurones connected to serotonin fibers.
MDMA also acts on the endocrine functions
of the hypothalamus
through the control of serotonin receivers, by leading an increase of the cortisol secretion
, of prolactine
and, maybe, melatonin
Thus, it's essential to space the rolls as much as possible
