SWIH's had an ungodly amount of kidney stones, and although she lives in a state that severely restricts access to opiates
/opioids, whenever she's gone to the ER complaining of kidney stone pain and a doctor verifies this, she's been given as much IV hydromorphone
as she needed. The only trouble is convincing ER staff to believe her, as kidney stones are kinda rare in people SWIH's age, but once they do, it's pretty much a no holds barred thing, in terms of pain management. Of every single painful/uncomfortable condition SWIH's ever had in her life (including cold turkey
heroin WD, falling on her back and cracking it on a table edge, subsequent slipped discs, being injected with naloxone to reverse a heroin
OD, plus lots of other things) kidney stones are hands down, the absolute worst. SWIH's never given birth, but she's had lots of women tell her that natural childbirth is a piece of cake compared to kidney stones. If someone has a stone, most doctors will give them highly potent narcotics
, as passing even a tiny stone is one of the most excruciating experiences in existence.
