psychoactive Puffballs and other rare fungi

I dont know if I just posted this or not because my computer froze but here it goes again.

I have heard some reports concerning the psychoactivity of certain puffball mushrooms as well as LYCOPERDON MARGINATUM, and CONOCYBE CYANOPUS among others. here is some interesting info.

Quote:
RITUAL EMPLOYMENT:

Conocybe Siligineoides has been reported as one of the sacred intoxicating
mushrooms of Mexico.

USAGE:

The mushrooms are eaten, the needed dosage is not known.

ACTIVE PRINCIPLES:

Unfortunately Psilocybine has not as yet been isolated from this species.
Psilocybine was isolated from Conocybe cyanopus of the United States,
although this species has never been ritually employed it is
pharmacologically psychoactive.

EFFECTS:

Reported to be similar to those of Psilocybine.

DANGERS:

Not known, start with small doses.

SOURCES:

Unfortunately I have very little information about hallucinogenic mushrooms
of the Conocybe family. It may be that both Conocybe cyanopus and Conocybe
siligineoides are psychoactive, if you know more about these mushrooms or if
you know where to order spores let me know. It would be especially
interesting to know if Conocybe cyanopus grows also in Europe, it is very
well possible that several psychedelic species of Conocybe grow in Europe.
Conocybe cyanopus is considered cosmopolitan and should grow also at our
latitudes.

Quote:
LYCOPERDON MARGINATUM - Lycoperdaceae (Kalamoto/Gi'-I-Sa-Wa)
---------------------

RITUAL EMPLOYMENT:

In northern Mexico, among the Tarahumara of Chihuahua, a species of
Lycoperdon, known as Kalamoto, is taken by sorcerers to approach people
without being detected and to make people sick. In southern Mexico the
Mixtecs also employ another species of Lycoperdon: L.mixtecorum.

USAGE:

The mushroom is eaten, probably a tea may be brewed.

ACTIVE PRINCIPLES:

There is as yet no phytochemical basis to explain the psychotropic effects.

EFFECTS:

The mushroom is said to induce a condition of half-sleep, during which voices
and echoes can be heard.

DANGERS:

Not exactly known, if you want to try start with a small dosage.

SOURCES:

Unfortunately none known.

Re: psychoactive Puffballs and other rare fungi

Extreme caution is advised concerning CONOCYBE mushrooms.

They are closely related to the genera Galerina and Pholiotina, some of which are deadly.

C. filaris contains cyclopeptide a-amanitin, a toxin found in some of the deadly AMANITA spp. It is possible that other psilocybin containing species may also contain similar toxins.

C.cyanopus has yeilded 0.33-0.55% Psilocybin as well as related alkaloids.

C.kuehneriana has yeilded 0.004% psilocin.

C.siligineoides has not been chemically analysed but though to contain psilocybin and/or psilocin.

C.smithii has yeilded psilocybin as well as related alkaloids.

Thirdedge added 12 Minutes and 16 Seconds later...

LYCOPERDON sp have reports of hangovers lasting several days, severe gastric disturbances. Psychoactive effects include hearing voices and echos, stimulation, vivid dreaming, altered color perception. Some of these species are associated with witches and witchcraft. Some smell like faeces. Don,t sound very recreational, swim would highly recommend sticking to tried and tested varieties of shrooms.

Re: psychoactive Puffballs and other rare fungi

Thank you for the very informative post. Swim was not concidering consuming such things I was simply suggesting that we should look into the alkaloid content farther because maybe a chemical can be extracted that could be completly different than anything any swims have tried before. (I know many unexplored ethnobotanicals are rather unknown in western civilization because they have unpleasent or potentially toxic side effects).

Its just interesting thats all.

Lycoperdon especially.

Swim is not looking to use drugs for recreational purposes swim wants lifechanging revelations and is using them to further explore his concious, and subconcious mind.

I found this relevant information on a trusted mycology website.

Note it has been pointed out to me that the illustrations look very different. The more flat capped specimens were collected in America, but they fit well with the pictures in the Fungi of Switzerland volume 4. The other specimens were checked by Dr Derek Reid at Kew and they fit the description of 'Conecap' very much better. I think it all goes to show that the age of the specimens is very important as they can change quite radically.

Re: psychoactive Puffballs and other rare fungi

Please remember that Mycology is constantly being re-written and any books more then twenty, if not ten years old should be considered secondary sources and incomplete. MANY formally considered edible species come with much stronger warnings these days, entire taxa have been renamed and restructured. I've been going through a rather old mushroom book recently and it's shockingly different.

Ethnobotanicals like these and other plants with little info, often times have never been observed being used, just that some guy once told a botanist about it. Shamans and medicine men aren't exactly ideal sources, they have a tendency to lie about things. These sorts of plants can be a good starting point for exploration, or sometimes a really good way to get killed. "Ritual use" does NOT mean safe, often people died from ritual use of plants, tobacco, datura, mescal beans, and many others were used by traditional societies for rites of passage, rites that you NEEDED to PASS. Failure to do so was "acceptable" to the people, that is, not everyone was going to survive these practices, those who did were the best and strongest, those who would keep the society strong.

Re: psychoactive Puffballs and other rare fungi

Swim remembers reading about a tribe who actually consumed the death cap mushroom in minute amounts for a vision quest. This is a mushroom so toxic that 1/4 of a fingernail is claimed enough to kill a small child. Much like the Mescal bean, there must have been some kind of hallucinogenic effect obtained from poisoning oneself halfway to death or perhaps the experience was based upon momentarily experiencing death or a state very close to it?

Mind that many of these toxic substances have long been discarded by the tribes who originally used them in favor of safer alternatives such as Peyote or Psilocybin mushrooms.

Re: psychoactive Puffballs and other rare fungi

There is currently a video on [a popular online video community] of a self-described shaman ingesting raw A. phalloides. The video's disclaimer makes cryptic reference to "ceremonial preparation."

That guy is a fucking douche bag who is going to get someone killed. I don't for a moment believe a word that comes out of his spew hole. Shitty enough video quality he could be holding damn near anything in his hands.

Please report his videos, vote them down, and spam comments.

Re: psychoactive Puffballs and other rare fungi

swim has seen that video, if he was really eating amanita phalloidies then he is retarted and is likely to end up getting himself killed (and if he does he kind of deserves it.) if he isnt then putting this video on youtube is extremely dangerous, and is likely to get someone killed.

Please dont attempt to eat amanita phalloidies or for that matter any of the afformentioned mushrooms as they are all likely toxic
