How to dry and store a fresh peyote cactus

My friend swim recently recieved 5 juicy peyote buttons from his friend Swimzy. Swim said he wasn't ready to eat the cactus yet and wanted to save them for a later date maybe in two or three weeks. Swim noticed keeping them in his house that a yellow almost chalk consistancy color started appearing on his sacred plants and now he says that he would like to properly dry them out to avoid this. His questions are first what is this color and what does it mean?(is it starting to mold?) And how would he go about the proper method to dry out his cactus? Would Swim cut them up into pieces and lay out into the sun? Keep the whole cactus in tact and leave in the sun? or would Swim place the whole cactus into the oven at low heat or cut into pieces and place into oven at low heat? Swim said he was very confused from all of his research because there were many different post saying many different things and swim DOES NOT want to destroy these beautiful sacraments.

When time is of the essence, there are a wide variety of pay for research services. This is not one of them.

Care to post a picture so we can see what you are talking about?

Re: How to dry and store a fresh peyote cactus

my friend swim does not have a camera that doesn't lock in gps coordinates so that is out of the question. It is a yellow discoloration at the meeting point of the cactus and stem. Swim isn't as much worried with this as he is worried about properly drying them out, how would swim go about doing such a thing?

how would one also go about changing the title of this thread, i think people would view it as tips how to dry and store and not someone needing tips

Re: How to dry and store a fresh peyote cactus

the low heat in the oven works. Keep the door cracked open, or the steam won't release and they will simply cook. Watch them s they dry out and make sure they don't burn. IT shouldn't take more then a few hours.

You could probably slice and string them up to hang too, that should work.

Keeping them whole might not be great, the skin is designed to keep water in.

But you're only drying plant material, not really a hard science.

Re: How to dry and store a fresh peyote cactus

thank you for your help, about what temperature should Swim keep his oven at during this process? and also did you know what that yellow discoloration starting to form on the sides was?
