Dear Drugs-Forum readers: We are a small non-profit that runs one of the most read drug information & addiction help websites in the world. We serve over 3 million readers per month, and have costs like all popular websites: servers, hosting, licenses and software. To protect our independence we do not run ads. We take no government funds. We run on donations which average $25. If everyone reading this would donate $5 then this fund raiser would be done in an hour. If Drugs-Forum is useful to you, take one minute to keep it online another year by donating whatever you can today. Donations are currently not sufficient to pay our bills and keep the site up. Your help is most welcome. Thank you.
Right now it's a lot of alcohol around, and SWIM is trying to kill it.
What do you mean by this?
What are you trying to do? Is this some sort of preparation for a drinking binge?
To be honest, like a lot of plants, there isn't a whole lot of data on "heroic" doses. While it seems like it should be safe, do you really want to be the first case of thistle OD? Remember when you go to the ER with some sort of novel poisoning, the doctors might not have any idea as to what to do for you.
Just because it's an herb, "natural" doesn't mean it's safe, especially in huge doses.
The doktor has seen a patient who OD'd on tea, Camellia sinensis, yeah that kind. They once had a botany teacher mention having hallucinations from fumes while cooking up an obscene quantity of wild carrot. Nutmeg is a fine spice, but in the quantities your talking about for milk thistle is a less then pleasant few days. fresh Salvia divinorum won't do anything till you stuff 60+ leaves in your mouth, how often have you eaten 60 of anything? Dangerous territory your getting into here. Still, there are sure to be rewards for those who preserver and survive such experiments.
On the other hand Wiki mentions
However higher doses have been studied, such as 600 mg daily in the treatment of type II diabetes and 600 or 1200 mg daily in patients chronically infected with hepatitis C virus.
So 4-5,000mg is probably in the safe range. Of course if you're thinking it's liver protecting properties will give you superhuman alcohol consumption abilities, remember it isn't going to do anything to protect your other systems. Sure your liver might be fine but if there's no brain to keep it going...
enough of these stupid "im going to drink loads, lolololol" topics.
Seriously, if there was a butt load of pills around, would you stuff 10 in your mouth at a time, just because they were there? Just because booze is legal for you doesn't mean you need to do it in massive amounts.
Milk thistle is not a cure for the damage that alcohol does to your body, it is used in most cases to reduce negative repercussions, and as a supplement to the casual night of overdoing it.
Alcohol doesn't go off, savor it, if you drink it en mass, you will just get ill, and regret the experience! If its a case of your parents being out of town and you wanting to demolish the liquor cupboard while they are gone, then invite enough mates over to drink through it at a good pace and spend a weekend of being wasted and having fun!
Take any drug responsibly, and treat it with respect, and you will enjoy its effects. We have all overdone it at one point or another, but most of us don't plan on overdoing it, we just fall under the influence and overdo it because we are on it. Please, just enjoy yourself with alcohol, don't abuse it, it will just lead to bad times.
On the plus side, kudos for looking up supplements that help your body recoup after alcohol. Swim normally take 2 in pills in the lead up to a night, 2 when he gets home with at least a pint of water, and 2 in the morning after he wakes up with a lovely reduced hangover.
I don't believe Milk Thistle can neutralise effects of alcohol or hangovers. AFAIK, Milk Thistle should be taken over a longer period of time and this allows the liver to function better generally and be more adept and ridding itself of toxic substances such as alcohol.
Froster added 4 Minutes and 6 Seconds later...
If you want to be able to drink lots over a certain period of time, make sure you drink lots of water, eat lots of food before you drink and get plenty of sleep inbetween

Reason: Automerged Doublepost
SWIM really fails to see why you NEED to drink all this alcohol, It makes no sence.
Is there some new state of enlightenment achieved by drinking silly quantities of booze that SWIM hasn't been told of?
Seriously, OP you need to grow up here, If you want the alcohol gone, tip it down the drain, or go make some hobo's day. If you want to enjoy it, invite some friends over, and share it. You don't have to drink it just because it is there. If you ignore the advice and do it anyway, you probably deserve whats coming to you.
How about, you drink responsibly? Would that kill you? The answer is no, but drinking irresponsibly CAN kill you.
Look, there isn't some magic cure to keep you alive when you have alcohol poisoning. Did you read my post? Do you understand that alcohol effects your body as a whole, not just the liver. You can't expect that taking some pill will keep you from harm.
I can't find anything on this Phosphatidylserine in relation to alcohol consumption, care to share your source of information?
I've got to ask you, what's the point of this experiment? Are you trying to experience a mega-dose of alcohol? Are you attempting to win a contest? Do you need to dispose of alcohol before your parents get home?
I just can't for the life of me comprehend the attraction of nearly ODing on alcohol. I've seen people nearly die from it, I've seen people wish they were dead, I've gone past my limits on occasion and was absolutely miserable. Alcohol only offers benefits to a certain point then it just makes you sick and you wake up the next day with no memory and a lot of pain.
so SWIYS deffinition of a hater is someone who is preventing SWIY to do serious damage to SWIYS body? SWIY is trying to help SWIY and taking time to warn SWIY about everything! and this is SWIYS thanks....
+ points for potter!

Hatstand: This is a harm reduction forum and many of us have been doing this sort of work for quite some time and have learned to recognize . While the OP didn't specifically imply they were planning on an OD quantity of alcohol, they did pretty strongly imply they were going to drink more then a healthy amount, why else would they need to be taking mega-doses of milk thistle?
The fact is the OP here has in the past few weeks posted multiple threads about their intentions of binge drinking, and while these binges have been pretty lame, it's still a dangerous behavior. When the person in question has been asked to justify such foolishness, they refuse to respond.
