3-MeO-PCP (3-Methoxyphencyclidine) is a dissociative, hallucinogen, and sedative of the arylcyclohexylamine chemical class, which produces effects similar but not identical to that of phencyclidine (PCP). It is a very strong compound which is active in the 1-10 mg range, so there is a high risk of overdose when not using a very exact method of measurement, and as with all chemicals in the arylcyclohexylamine class, it may cause neurotoxicity when used frequently or in high dose. It is classified currently as a research chemical.[1]

[top]Introduction to 3-MeO-PCP

3-MeO-PCP acts as a strong dissociative drug in a similar fashion to that of phencyclidine (PCP). While the effects of the two compounds may be similar, they are not identical, as 3-MeO-PCP has a binding profile for the target receptors which is slightly altered to that of phencyclidine (PCP). The psychoactive effects of 3-MeO-PCP are derived primarily through its ability to antagonise the NMDA receptors as well as inhibit the reuptake of dopamine. Compared to phencyclidine (PCP), 3-MeO-PCP is a considerably more potent NMDA agonist, while its ability to inhibit the reuptake of dopamine is equivalent to that of phencyclidine (PCP). 3-MeO-PCP has Ki values of 20 nM for NMDA, 216 nM for serotonin, and 42 nM for sigma 1.

[top]Ways of administration

3-MeO-PCP can be administered through a variety of different routes, the most common of which are oral consumption, intranasal insufflation, and vaporization in the form of laced marijuana/cigarettes. (Note: insufflation, injection, and rectal administration all require that 3-MeO-PCP be in salt form, typically HCl. Vaporization requires that it be in freebase form, as 100% of the HCl salt is pyrolyzed at 300C. Only 60% of the freebase is pyrolyzed at 300C.)

[top]The dangers of 3-MeO-PCP

Prior to administering 3-MeO-PCP, one should be aware of the very real set of dangers associated with this compound.
  • 3-MeO-PCP is a research chemical, thus the effects/side effects have yet to be formally established due to a lack of clinical trials.
  • 3-MeO-PCP is a strong dissociative drug, many users report experiencing amnesia whilst under the influence of this compound and sometimes making bad decisions.
  • 3-MeO-PCP is active in the single milligram dosage range, thus a reliable and well calibrated milligram scale/balance is required in order to safely measure the compound.
  • 3-MeO-PCP is a strong psychoactive substance, thus users whom have a known mental illness should avoid this compound as it may potentiate such symptoms.
