Clonidine is a drug that acts as an alpha-2 adrenergic agonist, the main effect being lowering blood pressure because it decreases the release of norepinephine and epinephrine (adrenalin). It is prescribed for people with high blood pressure, as well as being the main pharmacological remedy for opioid withdrawal due to its effects on the central nervous system. It helps alleviate some of the physical withdrawal symptoms such as excessive sweating and hot/cold flashes.

[top]Effects of Clonidine

Clonidine lowers blood pressure and eases symptoms of opioid withdrawal such as hot/cold flashes and excessive sweating. Clonidine can make the user drowsy or sleepy, and these effects are more prominent if clonidine is injected. Clonidine can have some anxiolytic (anxiety reducing) effects as well by relaxing the body.
