Drip: As long as it's fresh, drip coffee tastes alright to pretty good. Because it is filtered through paper it is less oily and therefore less tasty than coffee prepared via other methods. If the pot has been sitting on the hot plate for very long, the coffee begins to taste burned as it is maintained at a temperature somewhat higher than the ideal. The potency may be somewhat less than that of other methods, but most likely because this method is usually used for a lower quality, less fresh coffee and usually results in a more diluted brew.

Percolated: this is one of the tried and true methods of preparing coffee over a campfire, it makes a somewhat more bitter cup, though the effect of percolated coffee is somewhat stronger than drip coffee. You do get more oils in the finished product, which is a good thing, but it is difficult to find the ideal ratio of coffee to water and unless one is using an electric percolator, it is easy to get the water too hot (resulting in a more bitter cup).

Instant: this is the lowest quality of coffee, it is actually made using Coffea robusto instead of Coffea arabica. Coffea robusto is cheaper to produce, much more bitter, and contains more caffeine than Coffea arabica, which is why it is used in instant coffee, since the higher quality arabica beans are reserved for the methods which preserve its delicate and exquisite flavor. Instant coffee can be made to taste alright if served with milk and sugar, otherwise it is very bitter, almost sour. The upside is that it is more potent, so one strong cup feels roughly equivalent to 2-3 cups of strong arabica. This is nice because you won't want to drink anymore than is necessary to produce the desired effect, which alludes to the fact that instant coffee is a very utilitarian form of coffee: its cheap and it gives a strong buzz, making it useful for late nights studying or preparing for school/work when you're already late.

French Press: this is proto-man's preferred method of preparation, although it does take some time to perfect. Once perfected though, there is no doubt that it makes the best tasting cup, with rich aroma and flavor and a positive oil slick on the surface of the liquid. The use of the french press is, in proto-man's opinion, a necessary (though not sufficient) condition for the preparation of the best possible cup.

Espresso: well, the Italians certainly know how to make their coffee. Espresso is proto-man's next favorite preparation as they sure like their coffee strong and black. A good cup of espresso uses something like 30 fresh ground beans and takes about 30 seconds to pour from the espresso machine, resulting in a fine brown crema atop the 1-2 oz. of liquid. Espresso is made by forcing pressurized steam through a compressed disk of coffee, so it is the quickest method next to instant coffee, and it makes a small, concentrated cup that should be almost, but not quite, bitter. Bad espresso tastes either bitter or sour, depending on the number of beans, the cleanness of the water, and the force used to tamp the grinds down into the metal filter cup. A cup of espresso is commonly thought to be stronger than a cup of coffee, though this is in fact a fallacy. While espresso has a higher concentration of caffeine per ounce, a single shot is ~1.5 ounces and has between 75 and 120 mg of caffeine, compared to a 10-12 ounce of drip coffee, which contains 200-300 mg of caffeine.

Cold soak+press: this is an interesting method of preparation. The coffee is freshly ground and poured into a French press and then soaked in cold water and refrigerated for 12-24 hours before being pressed. It makes a cup that is nearly as potent effect-wise as a hot brewed cup, but the taste is much more mild. Tannins in the coffee are what give it a bitter taste and as they are not very soluble in cold water, the cold press gives a milder cup. Proto-man likes to do this sometimes, just because he prefers a French pressed cup and occasionally knows he won't have time in the morning to brew a hot cup.

Turkish: now, the Turks have really learned how to make an awesome cup of coffee. Proto-man wants to say its his favorite, but its not easy to do and requires a Turkish pot which isn't cheap. Turkish coffee has a very strong flavor because the coffee is very finely ground and mixed with spices and sugar before being boiled in the pot. So, a Turkish cup is strong, spicy, and sweet, and at the bottom of the cup is a little bit of coffee/spice sludge, which is probably the only aspect of this method that detracts from the sipping experience. Turkish cups are small, like espresso cups, and its impossible to get all of the liquid out without imbibing some of the bitter sludge at the bottom of the cup.

Aeropress: Proto-man got one of these as a birthday gift because he had read so many positive reviews of the product/method. It is quite a novel method of preparation: the coffee is very finely ground and poured into an open ended cylindrical chamber fitted with a porous cap and a filter at the bottom, then hot water is poured over the coffee and stirred for 20-30 seconds, then a plunger is moistened and fitted into the top of the chamber forming an airtight seal. The plunger is depressed slowly, using positive air pressure to force the liquid through the filter over the course of about 20-30 seconds. It is a very quick and easy method of preparing coffee, and it does make a nice mild tasting cup with almost no bitterness. This method is an alternative to espresso as it produces a very small cup, however, proto-man finds that while the cup has a very mild taste, it is less potent as well. In any case, he still has not worked out the kinks of this method and prefers to use his French press. The Aeropress is a very useful filtration device for the drug enthusiast though, and is worth the money if only as a quick and easy method of CWE for extracting APAP from opiate/APAP pharmaceutical drugs.
